Looking for a few (car) 3D models

Looking for a few (car) 3D models - 03/09/2010 01:39

I've been searching for a little while and have some up with some close but not precisely what I'm after matched using Google. Seeing as a few people here are into 3D modeling perhaps someone knows some better places to search.

These don't have to be free - I don't mind paying a bit for them if I know they're going to be of sufficient quality. They also don't need to have any textures. But my search skills are obviously not working very well for this subject matter.

The models I'm looking for:

Porsche 959 1986 Paris-Dakar Rally version. This is a bit different than the normal 959, specifically in the nose (has a hump) and the rear doesn't seem as low.

Example from the real car: http://www.flickriver.com/groups/porscheisrallying/pool/interesting/

If you google image search you will see a lot of examples where the hood/nose look the same as the "production" car - I believe that is the 1984 version. The 1986 was also modeled by Tamiya in there 1/12 scale RC racer: http://www.rcgrabbag.com/archives/tamiya-porsche-959-1986/

Lamborghini Cheetah (1977/78 military prototype): http://www.timpelen.com/?car=cheetah

Meyers Manx-style Dune/Beach Buggy: http://www.meyersmanx.com/kick-out.shtml and the Tamiya model (Sand Rover) here: http://www.volksworld.com/news/blog/225574/tamiya-sand-rover-buggy.html

The ones on Google 3D warehouse seem a little rough/sharp in the wrong places.

Yes, it's an unusual combination of cars. smile Thanks for any info/help.

The most common place is TurboSquid, but none of the cars you're looking for is there. I think you're looking for stuff that's rare enough that you likely aren't going to find any pre-made models.

I've forwarded this on to a number of film/game folks to see if some of them have better suggestions, or barring that, can give a quote on how much it might cost to have a freelancer build the models from scratch.

When you say quality, what use do you have in mind? Are we talking low-poly game-rez, high-poly for VFX type work? What file format do you need?

There's some care models here too: http://dmi.chez-alice.fr/models0.html

But no easy way to search, so you have to flick through the pages

Wow, some of those TurboSquid models are amazingly detailed.

Using Google with the 'site:' argument to narrow it down works pretty well.

The models all correspond to car bodies that I'd like to scratch (ish) build to scale for use on RC chassis.

If I could find them in a suitable (or convertible) 3D format then I'd consider getting them prototyped in a hard foam or paperboard of some kind as a basis to then do some refinement by hand, ultimately using the form to make a mold to then create the final shells.

This is mainly for personal/fun use/purpose, not a new enterprise I'm thinking of. smile

I think I can probably create a Cheetah solid from scratch using common materials. The others require a lot more curves/work.

With more searching last night (couldn't sleep) I did find that someone was making a model of the Cheetah, but apparently never posted it - that was in 2006. I did find a model of the Lambo LM002 which was their production offroad vehicle, the "Rambo Lambo." It's quite a bit different, but I might consider it.

I'd be really surprised if the Manx hasn't already been done in RC form, by more than one company.

Yeah, I found the Parma body and even kept a bookmark for it. But I don't like some of the squared details on their rendition, plus it's smaller than the 1:8 scale I wanted to play around with.

The Tamiya Sand Rover is curvier and more like I remember these types of buggies looking (there are in fact a ton of variations because once the Manx was released a ton of copycats emerged).

That Yellow Dune buggy looks like a Tamiya Sand Rover body on an alternate chassis. I think I might write to the owner to ask actually. It could be a clone/knock-off since a lot of companies copied Tamiya's molds, including for things like wheels and tired (the ones in the pictures are most definitely Tamiya's design).
