PS2 to USB? - 07/06/2011 22:34

Is it possible to cut the ps2 plug of of a device and wire it to a USB cable and have it actually work? Has anyone have tried it? Or should I stick with trying to find an adapter.
Thanks

You will need an adaptor, as it's more then a simple rewiring of pins. An actual conversion for the data has to occur for a USB mouse or keyboard to work in a PS/2 plug.

Most USB mice are PS/2 compatible. The adapters are totally passive, with simple straight-through wires.

But.. PS/2 devices are rarely USB compatible. For that purpose, you'll need a PS2-to-USB adapter or splitter. DealExtreme has them (cheap).

Well, I have one old CueCat that is the PS2 kind. I have seen pictures that there are USB ones.

If anyone has one (or two or three) of those CueCats laying around, I could use them for a project I am helping my grandson with.

He is also trying to find some old Commodore equipment as well. I think he got the bug from me, but mine got ripped when our place was broken into. Leave a nice desktop, and take an old, old C-64....go figure

Oh, I'll have to check. I know that at one point my father had one and I had one. It made the process of entering the DVDs we had into a digital library program really easy. I have no clue where they've gotten to, though, so I wouldn't count on me... smile

Did you ever find that CueCat and if so, do you want to get rid of it?

Thanks!

I'm sorry to say I didn't. I'm not sure what the use is of having giant tubs of old computer parts if you can't find something like this in the rubble!

Sorry about that...

I wasn't even aware that there were PS/2 CueCats. I'd only ever seen the USB variety.

But have you seen the price of "vintage" Commodore-64 systems lately? As a side note E-Bay needs to figure out how to ban ridiculously high BIN prices...

Ok, but watch to see if it sells!
I know that some of the old commodore stuff can be pricy... like the 3.5 inch floppy drive, but this person is hoping against hope to get 800 for two average systems.

I gave away two PET's that would have sold for a good price on ebay, but I chose to give them to a local collecter who was able to restore them for his collection.
