USB Vs. Network Need input - 25/05/2003 19:54

I finely got around to installing Xp on my computer and now when i try to connect to the Empeg Via USB I get error Downloading playlist.

No problerm I say so I fire up the network side Plug in a cable and try to upload its taking about 9 mins per Song.. In theroy Even 10Mbit should be faster then USB but for some reason it is Way Way Slower here..

(Background)
XP Pro
Firewall is Inabled (Don't think that is the issue)
100Mbit Intel 100+ Pro nic cards)

So here is my question

Anyway to get USB to work ??

Any Suggestions on why my Network is so slow when talking to the Empeg ?? it worked Great when I copied 70Gigs of Mp3's over after installing XP.

P.S. I have seen Issues like this with PC's not connecting to hubs in the correct manner.. Fix was to change Auto-Nego to 10 full, 10 half, 100 full or 100 half for the Nic,, does the Empeg have a Setting for this ?

Yes USB under XP was not supported in the beta 2.0 versions you need the final. Be sure to get the 2.0 final emplode and car player software.

Be sure to read the readme, as USB driver installation isn't plug-n-play with XP if you're upgrading. (I havn't actually tried it yet, so maybe it Just Works, but I doubt it)

I have installed 2.0 and a 5.78 meg File is taking just a bit over 5 mins to upload to the Empeg Via Network

(YUCK) Still tinkering with the USB to get it to work.

What kind of hubs/switches do you have in between your computer and your empeg? The best thing to try would be a direct connection using a crossover cable between your computer and the empeg. Also, you're sure you didn't accidentally select COM1 as the connection method?

I have a 3com Superstack III Switch No cross over cable and I am not digging around in my notes to make one I'll try that tommorow,

Network was the only Connection selected 5.78Meg File just over 5mins with network and 27 seconds via USB now that is Bassackwards.

P.S. This is the longest thread I have posted with out Tony Replying and fixing the Issue in one post. Quick someone Wake him up

There must be some problem ethernet works faster than USB for me.

I didn't have to do anything to get the usb to work. I just installed the 2.0 final emplode, then when I plugged my empeg in I got a new hardware found wizard picked automatic and clicked next.

Ethernet is definatly faster though.

Re: USB Vs. Network Need input - 25/05/2003 22:39

As well it should

USB: 12Mbits/s (1.5MBYTES/s)
Hi-Speed USB: 480Mbits/s
Both Ethernet and Fast Ethernet should be Much faster the issue seems to be in the negoation the Empeg is doing with the Hub. I could drag it into work and get more info but I bet Hugo and Tony could rattle it off the top of there heads after drinking 42 beers each.

As work I banged my head blood trying to find out why one set of Computers would work and the other set showed link down cable problem,,, it ended up being a negotation issue between the SMC 12XX Cards and the Enterasys 10base 24 Port switch cards when the card and the nic were both set to Auto Negotaion they would fail negotion and retry over and over again (No link or VERY slow Link depending on the on the mood of the computer)

best fix was to set the port on the card to 10full and the Nic to match. Problem solved..

IS there a setting like this on the empeg ???

Re: USB Vs. Network Need input - 25/05/2003 22:49

Well, it's known that ocasionally an empeg network port will not connect with certain hubs. It's not known why, and not all empegs exhibit the problem with the same hub. Usually when the imcompatibility arises, there is no link at all, and adding a different hub inbeween will solve the problem. Some hubs can have problems switching between 10 and 100Mbps ports, so if you can force everything down to 10Mbps that might help, but I wouldn't expect it to solve the problem. Usually I'd just tell you to replace that Linksys switch, but you don't have one...

The empeg doesn't support USB2.0 or fast Ethernet. You're limited to a theoretical maximum of 12MBit/s with the USB port and 10MBit/s with the Ethernet. The overheads with USB are much greater however so you should still definately get a better transfer rate with Ethernet.

No idea how you'd force the empeg to full or half duplex though. I've just had a quick poke through the SMC 9194 Tifon driver and it doesn't even mention anything about full or half duplex.

You may just have an incompatible hub/switch unfortunately. Some other people have reported that the empeg just doesn't like certain models/brands and would refuse to work properly.

Re: USB Vs. Network Need input - 26/05/2003 16:11

After we had this exchange last night I decided to install gpsapp+roadmap, and threw my empeg in the closet on the network and started experienceing this exact behavior. Throughput over ftp could be measured in kb/minute, really, and empty syncs would work fine. Syncs with one file would usualy time out. It took me half an hour to finally replace the network cable to the empeg, and everything worked perfectly. Needless to say, that cable is now in the trash can.
