swap mk2 and mk2a display boards - 25/04/2006 22:18

Hi,
I'm curious if it would be possible to swap a mk2 display board out for a mk2a display board.

I've got a few empegs here which are in different stages of disrepair, I'm trying to fix my buddies empeg which got crushed under a pile of heavy amps, with a mk2 unit I purchased off of ebay. When removing the mk2's knob (it had to be glued), I managed to pull half the encoder apart and maybe cracked my display nipple. I still can't get the knob off of the shaft after removing the shaft from the empeg.

So, I'd like to get at least one empeg somewhat usable while I wait for some extra encoders. Can I swap out the mk2 display board and install the mk2a version into the mk2? Or will I run the risk of breaking something else?

They are interchangeable. Go for it.

Also, I have a bunch of Mk2 (not Mk2a) encoders here still. Need one?

Yes, I would absolutely love one.

On a side note, this mk2 has a couple of weird items I've never seen before. The first one is a single strand of wire placed in the middle of both the IDE and Display headers. What's the deal with that?

Also, there is a weird looking repair, I'm going to take a picture and upload it because I can't quite explain it.

Just in case anyone wanted to see the results of destroying an encoder, see below...

Although it's not in the FAQ itself, it's covered in the disk upgrade guide at the point where you're removing the old disk drive..

The first is a standard mod on Mk 2 boards, don't worry about it.

The thin "wire" is plastic pipe, put there to stop you pushing the cables onto the headers too far (the original pink stripe cables, that is), and to make them a bit easier to get off. YOu should really retain it. The majority of repairs I see here have already had the cable off a few times and it has usually been discarded.

Can you tell me what this mod does, or what it fixed. I'm quite curious as to what it's doing.

Also, I did leave the plastic pipes in place, the IDE was was floating around the inside of the case, but I put it back.

I also noticed on the mk2 display board, that a couple of the display pins aren't soldered. In the first group of 3 pins the inside pair isn't soldered into the board. Is this also normal?

Anyways, Thanks Rob for the info!
