60GB MK2a - one drive or 2x 30GB?

60GB MK2a - one drive or 2x 30GB? - 04/02/2002 19:21

I got confirmation today, 4 February 2002, that the RioCar 60 GB unit I ordered has been shipped. Can anyone tell me if this unit has a single 60 GB hard drive (the IBM Travelstar 60GH perhaps) or are two 30 GB hard drives installed? If two drives are standard in the 60 GB unit which manufacturer and model are they likely to be? Thank you

Your 60 GB player will have two 30GB drives, most likely IBM Travelstar.

All 60gb units from Rio contain 2 30gb drives, since 60gb drives were not available when the units were built. (Only large computer makers get the new drives first, and the 60gb drives just came out recently).

My 60gb came with 2 Fujitsu drives, and my friend got one with 2 IBM drives.

This one is a FAQ entry.

I encourage all new users to read the FAQ before posting questions. And I encourage all long-time users to point new users to the FAQ when they ask a FAQ-answered question rather than answering the question directly.

First, my thanks to those who answered my inquiry and let me know I can expect 2 30 GB hard drives in the 60 GB RioCar I have ordered. Very quick and useful answers.

Tony, thank you for your reply and the FAQ reference that answers my question. I am most impressed with the RioCar.org site. I have spent hours reading the FAQ, forum posts and how to guides like the Rio Car Disk Upgrade Guide. I just missed the answer to my question. Perhaps I am suffering from information overload! Cheers...

Something i've noticed... is a bunch of newbies that HAVE read the faq... they just missed the one thing they ask about. The SEARCH function of the FAQ needs to be pointed to more, so people don't try skimming the entire thing and miss what they are looking for.

The current problem with the FAQ's search function is that it's "exact phrase only" at the current time and if you don't take that into account, your search will likely fail.

I'm going to talk to Drakino about this...

Heh, well my workaround for now is the notice Tony suggested that the search is exact phrase only. I'll get around to coding it better one day... (Or if anyone wants to post some examples in PHP and MySQL parsing a multi word query, that would be appreciated).

Probably 2 x IBM-DJSA-230 -- you'll have to look that up (at IBM.com) to see if those are "GH".

EDIT: actually, those are NOT "GH" drives.

Just take the input of the search box and split on whitespace to get an array of search terms. Then using that array, construct an SQL statement using a LIKE match on each word. That will eliminate the exact phrase match. It's not a sexy solution, but it should work.

Yup, mine's got Fujitsu drives too. If I had had a choice in the matter I would've opted for the IBM drives, but so far the Fujitsus also seem to do an excellent job.
