My Wish list - only one item in it... - 04/02/2002 13:18

I wish.....

that someone somewhere would release an update.....

as far as I can see it support for this and the Dell variant
is dead... It's been nearly 12 months since I got my units, and even before then people have been asking when the next update would be..

The only thing I can say to potential buyers is - you get what's in the box, and that's it. My Dell remote (dunno about the Rio one) has a station button that will never be used, streaming from the net - nope not gonna happen...

Actually, I'll amend what I said earlier, for potential buyers of this product the only advice I can offer is don't.. just buy something newer and maybe it'll be supported beyond next week.

They were really busy putting out the HSX-109 during the last year, and so didn't have time to work on a receiver update.

I'm hoping that the next software update for the HSX-109 (being planned now) will include a Receiver software update since it serves receivers.

Have you told Rio that? We have quite a lot of semi-finished new features here (including Shoutcast) but without demand from marketing they won't make it out of the building.

There are more Receiver owners out there than car player owners, but most of them seem to be silent.

Do you think you could get Rio to authorize unofficial, geek-oriented updates? Slap a "beta" label on 'em and you can disavow the company of just about any responsibilty whatsoever (or just let Microsoft sell it, has about the same effect ).

I know you've got a whole slew of geeky-geeks (myself included) who would jump at a chance to stress-test such a beta (and feedback with new feature requests and suggestions).

Would they be agreeable to (and would you be interested in) a semi-closed community of more active geeks who could work with you to help improve the product, better protocol, etc.? I've got a lot of ideas that might either drive / modify some of your approach, or get totally broken by whatever your next release is, so I'm really keen on getting involved, somewhere, somehow...

You could bill it as "market research," then when the geeks start using it, and modifying the open-source servers to supply the same features, you can point Marketing at those sites and say "see? People love these new features, give us $$ to make it stable and have a release soon." Or somesuch.

You don't even need to release source code to accomlish this -- just frank, close, technical exchanges of ideas, information, protocols, etc. Though I do wonder if you wouldn't get a whole lot more development done with an open-source (or even just NDA'd) 3rd party development project...

Just thoughts...I'm sure they've been discussed to death here (and in your board rooms) before...

Yeah, where should we fire that email... i'm sure we can get a tiny little movement going to annoy them into allocating some $ for you guys to update this thing. I still hardly use it just because of the database size bug. It needs it's update bad, it's getting all lonely over there on the shelf!

Ditto, where do we send the e-mail, I've been wanting streaming audio since I bought this...But since I bought my empeg, the Receiver has been gathering dust...Ok, how many rounds do we need to buy for the gang for us to get a copy of the beta you've got?

Streaming audio on the Rio? What a crazy idea!

ps, I'm presently listening to streaming audio on my Rio, thanks to the efforts of one Philip Gladstone.
