Startup Sound - 16/09/2000 05:07

I now have a startup logo, but was wondering if it's possible to create a startup sound....

[unhelpful sarcastic remark]
You plan on converting "The Microsoft Sound" to mp3?
[/unhelpful sarcastic remark]

Seriously though, I don't know if this is possible. What would you use it for?

Well you could get the empeg to play the sound of jet engines firing up/afterburners kicking in..... or for for impressing the more gullible friends how about "good morning boss, where do you want to go today...?
Actually i remember a post about the mech warrior ignition sequence, "weapons, online...(whirring noise),servos,online......(whining noise, clunk), ignition sequence starting..."
I guess it has only fun applications, but I am willing to be proved wrong.

Re: Startup Sound - 17/09/2000 05:07

Greetings!

Well, if you wanted to find a useful application, you could always tie it in with the startup screen thread. Record
your own message - "This empeg unit belongs to xxxxx. If found, please call +x xxx xxx xxxx. A reward is available
for this unit's safe return..." Or something like that.

Or, you could always do something with the "Emergency Broadcast System"... My personal favorite.

Re: Startup Sound - 17/09/2000 06:03

i can't believe noone has mentioned the blatantly obvious use for startup sounds...the original in car computer. there are all sorts of cheesy knight rider sound clips at www.soundamerica.com. when i was using a laptop as my mp3 player before the empeg, my startup sound was KITT saying "All systems go Michael!". at any rate, it fits the scenario pretty well.

I don't think anyone forgot about Knight Rider, we just chose not to bring it up. Then you had to go and do it.

I don't know about anyone else, but my home is a Hasselhoff-free zone.

Well...I was wanting to use it for fun. My boss has an AC Cobra and he's getting an EMPEG and I was thinking of using the airplane safetey stuff.... Please fasten your seat belts and note that in event of emergency please dive through the nearest window.....????

Well, for those egomaniacs out there, I guess we could always use James Earl Jones as Darth Vader... "What is thy bidding, my master?"

Just just love them....

I can't believe you are dissing Knight Rider!! Hahaha. I wanted Kitt sooo bad when i was little... a car that talked to you.. oh man. You KNOW you'd be feeling cool if your car made that whoosh whoosh noise with side to side swooping red lights in front. Airwolf, Knight Rider, and MacGyver... the USA Network's best contributions to American pop culture...hahah.

With VR and Text to Speech...we're half way there...so who's working on the AI? Devan?

Young whippersnapper. USA network just shows old re-runs of those shows, they didn't make 'em.

Just a little trivia... The guy responsible for the Cylons from Battlestar Galactica is also responsible for Knight Rider... and Kit's "swoosh-swoosh" red light thingy.

Hmmm... How about a Cylon "By-your-command" start up sound clip?

Re: Startup Sound - 18/09/2000 19:53

I've always wanted to get a plaque that says:
"Driver reserves the right to defenestrate the passenger."

Maybe I'll make the empeg say it in the same speed that the ads use to cram 30 seconds of legal disclaimers into 10 seconds.

Re: Startup Sound - 19/09/2000 05:03

one nice thing about the empeg that isn't possible on a regular cd player (at least without burning .wav cds) is stuff like theme songs. i have the delta force theme song, threes company, sanford and son, scooby doo, rocky, indiana jones, back to the future, star wars, the jetsons, beverly hills cop, the transformers, he man, superman, the greatest american hero, and a few more. i guess you could always burn these onto a cd, but like tony mentioned in his "cool things about the empeg thread", it is pretty weird but cool when you have slayer blasting and the next song the a team theme song.

alas, the theme song i really want is knight rider, but i cannot seem to find an mp3 version of it with the words in it. every copy i find only has the bass line and keyboard. anyone actually have this?

Just to get you off this hazelnut. (I won't even type the name.)
How about some Star Trek, Star Wars or Lexx sounds ?

btw:
Does anyone have a girlfirend/sister/mother with a "supersexy"-voice ?
I'm still looking for that "You left your light on, honey"-sample.

Re: Startup Sound - 19/09/2000 13:21

I had the Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries startup sound on mine, and had it combined with the custom logo code I used. All I did was start the sound player in the background first, displayed the logo, ran my D.net code, then waited for the sound to stop and then it called the empeg init to start the player. One problem I ran into was the volume. I never did get around to having a working mixer on the empeg before I sold it.

"mother" and "sexy" DO NOT belong in the same sentence, period.

Haha, you guys crack me up. Am I correct in assuming that the startup sound isn't possible? I just thought I'd say something since it appears nobody's answered the guy's original post either way!

And I definitely want that Darth Vader sample! (although it might get annoying after a few times)

Re: Startup Sound - 20/09/2000 15:29

the real original question that started this whole ridiculous thread was whether or not it was actually possible to play a startup sound. instead of the question actually being answered, myself and others managed to divert a good question into a pointless discussion of tv theme songs and sounds:)

replace your /bin/init with your own init script and run the commandline xaudio (see developer site) version with your startup sound :-)

Wow, it doesn't get any simpler than that, does it?

I'd guess you need to hand-reduce the volume of the file you're playing or else it would play at 100% volume. Right?

Or get a command line mixer, and either set the volume to a rate for either car or home, or depending on how the empeg mixer is touched, just make sure the last mixer value is used. I was working on this when I sold my player.

Can you get the values from /proc/empeg_state at this point, or have they not been restored when init runs?
