A couple of wishes... - 02/08/2002 00:35

I wish for the volume ramp up to be fixed (specifially when you turn on the ignition) [Am I the only guy here that cranks his Paul van Dyk up so loud that my ears start to distort, then run into Ralphs for some steaks, get back into my car and promptly put a dent in my ceiling from jumping outta my seat from the jolt of the instantaneous loudness?] and a greater tolerance for bad MP3 files.

I've come across a few files that were bad (err, stated as bad on the player but most of the time truely ok, but that's different issue) and stopped the player with the typical "bad Mp3 file" box. Usually all I need to do is go to the seek tool and jog forward a few seconds to resume playing. I'd like the player to do this automatically. Or if that can't be done then I'd like it to automatically flash that "bad MP3 file" box, beep, and then move on to the next song.

And while we're discussing bad MP3s, is there anyway that we can get the player NOT to play the screeching sounds when it hickups on a bad file? I know my ears should be used to "screeching and garbled up mess" but is it really necessary?

Those are a couple frustrations that I really wish could be hashed out soon .

Thanks,

Curly

My volume ramping works quite well since Beta13....

hehe, I can just see the roof of your Subbie now...

It still seems a little stepped, or is that just me? Maybe about 5 or 6 steps to full volume. Just enough time to spin the wheel left before bleeding from ears ensues. A smooth ramp would be nicer, but this is okay.

Thats alot of work, and would require thinking, something im just not willing to do before i get out of my car, hrm maybe a feture in empolde where u can tell the player to automatically turn to a certain level when starting?? or even hijack could do something like this i belive. That would be neat, i wish it woudl even do the same for standby. So when the player comes out of standby it changes to a certain level. Just a thought

Ah...it's good to know that I'm not the only one...I have a whole load of files that my brother ripped (I think with MMJB) that play fine in any mp3 software I've ever used except the empeg. On the empeg there is the screeching either at the beginning or end of the file (or occasionally both).

Anyhoo, we're in the process of re-ripping the whole bunch at a higher quality in EAC/Lame, but it'd be nice to have the tolerance that even the "cheap crap" mp3 players have for ignoring that stuff. It causes my passengers to put the aforementioned dents in the roof quite often.

I can provide sample files needed for testing if anyone wants to tackle this.

I think one could do that in Hijack right now.

Hijack knows the values being written to flash. It could just always intercept the value being written to "in car volume level" and always set it to -25db or whatever you spec. That way, every time the player is booted in the car, its volume will be at that exact level.

That would really rock, I think I'll put in a wish for it in Programming.

Sounds like the bug where MMJB pads with FF's instead of 00's between the ID3V2 tags and the audio frames. We fixed up our parsers to deal with it on most products, but maybe not the car yet (have you tried Beta 13?).

Yeah Brad, after a couple of concussions, I decided to keep my sunroof permanently open

Regarding the volume ramping, I get about 3 steps, and sometimes the last step is a bigger jump in volume and takes more time to take effect.

Rob

It still squeals in beta 13. It'd be great if you could add that to the bug list (is it a bug?) or feature request list. I've lived with it for a while now and I can live with it till the next version comes out whenever that may occur.

What about an auto-hush (mute) it's value is already set in config.ini right?

Oh yeah, I've got one more wish, along the line of one already mentioned. How about an auto-skip of "Invaild File Format" MP3s. It's nice to be informed that the current track is invalid and needs to be deleted/fixed/re-ripped, but, I don't think it's so nice for the player to go on pause and wait for me do something other than curse. Can't it just flash the "Invalid..." box for a couple secs and then continue on in the playlist? The blank look with the continuous error message just reminds me too much of my ex-girlfriend while in bed with her.

...and tag it as Marked at the same time, so it's easy to find at your next syncing session...

Never mind, I had my mind in the gutter. That's a very good suggestion, I totally agree with it.
