i assume with this being an audiophile type board, a great deal of you have good enough taste in music to appreciate the late great Pixies. They just released a 9 song CD in the States today that is filled with unreleased demos. It is _really_ good! As an avid Pixies fanatic (i have their logo tattooed in my right forearm - really), this is the best thing I've heard in a while.

Hope some of you guys check it out.

snip from CD sleeve

"The songs on this CD were recorded in March 1987 and were included on what has come to be known by diehard Pixies fans as "The Purple Tape". From this collection of 17 songs, 8 were chosen to comprise their 1st album "Come on Pilgrim". These are the 9 remaining songs and feature the original recording of "Here comes your man" as well as a previously unreleased track "Rock A My Soul."

I own every piece of recorded material by the Pixies including all singles and none of these versions are on them.

I WISH there was newly recorded material!

So if you've heard of the Pixies but never heard the Pixies, whats the definitive Pixie title.

I would have to go with Bossanova or Surfer Rosa. "Where is my mind" has got to be one of their greatest songs (imo).

"Surfer Rosa" is my personal favorite follwed closely by "Bossanova"

I would have to say the "Doolittle" is probably their most successful album and would be the ONE to get if you have never "heard" the Pixies.

They are all brilliant IMHO.

Before you go out and spend $18 on it (probably $12, really -- I think that they're all Price Savers or whatever), you might want to find a friend who has something of theirs and listen to it. It's definitely not for everyone (though I love them), and I don't think we know your tastes. Regardless, I'd tend to agree with the other suggestions, but Trompe Le Monde might be a little more accessible to the virgin ear.

It's not as bad as telling someone that Zen Arcade is Husker Du's best album, though.

You can get Surfer Rosa and Come On Pilgrim together on one disc. In my opinion that would be your best place to start.

While Trompe Le Monde is a sonic masterpiece and is the loo i chose to engrave in my forearm, it may be too heavy/noisy for the virgin Pixdies ear.

Doolittle has songs like "Monkey Gone to Heaven", "Here Comes your Man", "Mr Grieves" (one of my all time favorite songs!), and "Hey".

I think Doolittle would make a fan out of anyone who heard it. And then when you think they they were making this music in 1989, it becomes even more amazing.

The "Come on Pilgrim"/"Surefer Rosa" split still gets the most playtime for me.
