thanks for the links. I actually looked at one yesterday. I parked next to one and it looks about the same size as the golf but the rear storage is about a fourth a much. Man that engine is crammed in there too.

Depending who you are, this is either a design or nostalgia exercise, not a car based on ergonomics - and I can't see where the Empeg goes - these manufacturers just don't think things through!

The factory head unit would have to be removed for the empeg.

The seat felt about the same as the golf I would rather have cloth though.

This is the only other decent hatchback I can find other than the golf which has turned out to be crap.

Looking for a sporty hatchback with stacks of room (ie will fit two 20" Monitors or all the gubbins needed for 2 babies for a week)??

The Subaru Impreza Turbo. Goes like you wouldn't believe, corners like it's on rails and can fit a family of 4 with luggage easily.

And they're pretty cheap to buy, insure and run.

And I thought the Golf GTi Turbo was okay - not staggeringly exciting, but it had some nice features. I especially liked the speed related volume control;-)

I didn't look too closely at subaru I will have to look again. The AWD kinda scares me because it sounds like more service.

when is the last time you got your gearbox serviced ?

No reason why the 4wd should cause any huge problems as long as you treat it well and look after your oil.

That's probably true but I'm the one who has turbos die at 45K miles. And brake pads all out and wreck calipers.

Actaully, I tend to drive my cars pretty hard and the Subaru holds up bettter, needs less servicing and is cheaper to service than a few other I have had (including Golf GTi T, Audi GT Coupe Sport, Rover 820)

I go through tyres every 12000 miles or so though. 4WD does use them up a wee bit faster than 2WD. Admittedly going sideways at every possible opportunity eats them even faster.
