a general question, it was mentioned earlier somewhere, that piracy security on the empeg player, meant that you couldn't download MP3's from the empeg player to other devices or PC's. is this the case and more importantly, i assume that you can clear down loaded MP3's from the empeg player and load up more when you are bored with your playlists and room is tight?

any response welcome

I believe that you can delete mp3's from the unit via the supplied software, and upload new tunes as required..

Yes, you can delete tunes from the unit. We *may* remove the restriction on getting tunes off the unit, due to the RIAA ruling which specifically exempted hard disks from the SCMS scheme. This needs looking into legally, and we're a little busy atm ;)

wait a minute, are you saying that, at the moment you can't physically remove MP3's or you can't legally rempve MP3's from the empeg player?

From the looks of it you can delete the MP3's but you cannot transfer them back to a pc..

I.E. you can take tunes from the PC and put them into the empeg, but you can't take tunes from the empeg and but them back on the pc...

This is the restriction that empeg might remove (Please.. =)

Wouldn't it just be a simple matter of installing an ftpd on the empeg?

Sure - with the mark2's.. The original empeg's don't have an ethernet port..

...but since you can run a PPP enabled kernel on the Mk1, you would still be able to run any IP based application such as NFS, FTP, TELENT (etc.) over the serial line. Not fast, but it works.

I think by the time you can get ftpd (or for that matter PPP) to work on your empeg you aren't really going to need to use your empeg to copy your MP3 files to all your d00dz.

Save the whales. Feed the hungry. Free the mallocs.

With the MK2 coming close, there got to be a convinient way to get the MP3 files off the MK1 back to the PC. Myself, I ripped all the CD's, put them on the MK1, and we are talking lots. For other reasons, (disk corrupted) I have lost all the MP3's on the PC. I do NOT NOT want to spend a week ripping all the stuff again. Whatever RIAA says or think, it's a different legal situation everywhere in the world. We do not all live in the U.S., remember. And, going via serial with ftp or whatever is not an alternative if you talk 20 GB. Please, consider making this possible. You could provide a tool maybe just for the guys who upgrade, but personally, I definately need a way of doing that (or I have to swap disks which I do not want since this would kill warrenty). Thanks! J.

Jo, no reason for panic: Mark2 will ship with a utility to transfer your MP3s (and playlists) from Emma onto Mark2.
Have a look at this post of early May here . High class service from Empeg, as usual! ..

(Won't help the poor guys who already sold their Emmas though)
