I tried to do this with my wife's palm. Despite the fact that the laptop's IRDA driver could see the palm, there was no way to synch with the palm because the palm's software simply didn't have any way to synch via infrared.

It was an older palm, though, perhaps newer ones have this ability, I don't know.

The old laptop did it with no problem what so ever over win98 so the palm can do it no probs all i think i need to do is to get an infra red com port running.

Yeah, probably just a question of the proper IRDA drivers for your laptop, then.

I've done this with a visor and a palm in win 98. Have you gotten anything to work with your Infared port? Most of the time they have to actually be set to on, not to be confused with stun. And a number of times per min/hour set for them to search for a response.

Sounds like you need an updated HotSync software package, version 3.1.1 or higher. Information on 3.1.1 is here:
http://www.palm.com/support/downloads/palmhs_update.html

And specificially it talks about the changes to Windows 2000 IR, and that 3.1.1 is updated to address these changes.

IR in 2000 dosen't let you just set a com port like 98 did.

Is there any way to have that port spit out commands like a remote control would?

Not that I know of offhand, but I've never looked for my PC. In theory with the right software, it can receive IR commands, so I would imagine the opposite should be possible.

Are your refering to the com port or the Palm port?

I'm refering to the Com port... It'd be nice to be able to have my notebook as a master remote for my entertainment sys.

It's my understanding that the IRDA ports of most portable computer devices are not very bright when compared to a good old universal remote. For instance, I seem to recall that there's a piece of software you can run on your Palm that turns it into an IR remote. But most people don't like it because the output is so dim that you have to be exactly in front of the TV with the Palm pointed directly at it.

I had exactly the same problem using my Ericsson t68 over IR on Windows 2000. It worked perfectly until I had to rebuild my laptop (Tosh Sat Pro) from the CD and after that, I no longer had a IR COM port, the IR port works as I can still send operator logos to it. But I can no longer use the modem. I think Thinforths problem is the lack of IR COM port and nothing else. I was unable to fix this problem, so I'm now waiting for Bluetooth cards to drop below the £100 mark...

My Nokia 8290 is seen by Windows 2000 in the modems control panal, and gets a COM port that way. But with 2000, it seems specific to the device, so either a driver has to be released, or a workaround has to happen. I do remember 98's little checkboxes for "Use IR port at COMx and LPTy" and wish 2000 would just do it that way.
