I am considering getting a replay tv 4500 and have some questions.

Can I connect the PVR to the TV using composite or svideo. In the manual it appears you can.

Does replay have something similar to tivo's thumbs up and down feature where it will automatically record shows it thinks you would like.

Has anyone tried the remote on a sony 40XBR800 TV.

Any feedback would be great.

Well, I worship my TiVo, but my POV has been stated so many times on this BBS already. Plus, these questions seem like he already made the decision.

I don't care which one is better so don't tell me that. I don't want to start a holy war

I just want to know if it has these few features .

The Replay has both composite and svideo (and VGA output)

the closest thing to thumbs up in replay is theme based recordings. You select key words like ‘home’ or ‘Kournikova’ and it will automatically record any thing that has bob villa or Anna (without creating a record conflict).

I am guessing you are asking weather the replay remote can control the Sony TV - It controls the power and volume of my 36" Sony no problem.

Either Replay or Tivo - once you have one, there is no going back to live TV!!!

(and VGA output)

I did not need to know that... Considering my TV is a 27 inch VGA monitor right now...

Anyone know if Replay is ever going to make a Satelite version? Thats the one big thing stopping me from getting one. For now, my upgrade path is to a Dish 721 system, that mlord says is pretty hackable.

Does the tivo2 still require a phone line or can I use broadband.

Doubtful – tivo has directtv locked up in a contract and Hughes makes their own version of a pvr.

Replay can control almost all sat receivers to change channels for recordings. It can interface though a serial connection or an ir blaster.

You can use broadband as your only connection device with Tivo2. You just have to buy one of the supported USB ethernet cards. Tigerdirect.com has one for $4.99 that is supported, so it's not that big a deal that ethernet is not built on.

Can you tell me if there is a listing of supported usb to ethernet adaptors. Then I just have to put in "#401," for the phone number right ?

Also I can connect the tivo2 to my tv using svideo or standard video inputs right.

I am trying to find this info on the tivo community forum but there are many conflicting or confusing posts.

You must enter ,#401 (take note of the comma) to use ethernet for your "daily call." Please note that ethernet is "unsupported," so there will be no documentation about it with your TiVo and TiVo help desk people will not answer questions about it. And yes, TiVo Series2 can output Composite and S-Video as well as RF (coaxial).

Thanks for the info I know the ethernet is an unsupported feature. Tivo should have the manual avaliable for download on their website that would help answer some questions too.

You also need a DHCP server on your network somewhere for it to get an IP from, and you don't want it to have a routable one accessible to the outside world... A TiVo on a public IP is an exposed target for hacking or DOS attacks (although it's relatively safe because there's no servers running until you start getting into hacking the box).
