On the way in to the office this morning, my FM stations suddenly lost the stereo indicator and now they are barely audible with the volume up high. The signal meter indicates full strength. The AM stations come in fine and play as usual, the player plays as usual, but *all* FM stations are affected in this way. Is my tuner dying? Is it repairable?

I would reckon either:

- you have an active antenna (you are driving a VW or a car manufactured by a company associated with them) and the contact to the antenna power feed has gone duff (wiring or connector)

- you have a duff connection to the antenna, probably the signal lead

- one of the connectors in your wiring harness has some surface corrosion or some such that is screwing things up: pull all your connectors in the harness apart and re-seat them.

It's a Dodge RAM truck, no power antenna so that can rule out the first idea.
The other two I'll check out, but wouldn't a duff conection the the antenna display the same behavior on both AM and FM stations?
Thanks!

Not neccessarily - FM and AM are far enough apart for them to be affected differently. You might have a capacitive 'short' somewhere that attenuates higher frequencies (FM) more that lower frequencies (AM). Or the connection could be such that it's appearing as an inductance, which would have the same effect.

Anyway, theories aside, in any electronic component, bet on mechanical elements failing first. In this case, the connector.

Same thing was happening to my tuner. The connector was loose. Reconnected it and put zip ties around the case and connector. No problems since.

AH! Encouraging news! Wouldn't surprise me, it is a 4x4 and I go over lots of bumps and the likes. I'll report back my findings when I get a chance to dig into the dash. Thanks all!
