Does anyone know of inkjet printers that are convertable to print on CDs? I want a cheap solution to print labels on DVDs and paper labels suck IMHO. I suppose $350 for a pre-modded C60 isn't too high, but I'd rather just modify the printer myself. Does anyone know of a source for instructions... or am I just wasting time?

Wow, I just found this Casio CW-50 for $150. Anyone have an opinion on that? Looks good for simply writing neat labels on a CD.

EDIT: It is cheaper to buy it directly from Casio.

EDIT #2: Provantage has it for $89. If it's going to be that cheap, I think I am going for this thermal thing.

It's not clear whether that is single- or multi- color...the description states that it comes with "...color ribbon cartridge (black)..", and the other demo images are all single color too.

Single color is OK. I just want my DVDs to look good. I think the Casio thing is probably better than ink jet because it is thermal. I would imagine that not all DVD-Rs have printable surfaces. The thermal prtiner can probably print on anything.

Also, anyone have an opinion on this DVD-R deal. Those prices seem very good.

What's the cost per CD/DVD for the thermal cartriges? That looks like it would be quite nice to have, especially considering my habbit of storing burned CDs on a spindle without writing on them. This last week I've realized that I'm within six months owning a DVD burner, so I'm going to need something.

Unfortunately, I don't know how many cds you can get out of a cartridge. It comes with one black ribbon, and a 3 pack of ribbons costs $19.

Sorry for changing the subject but have you replaced any of the fans in the SB51. The PSU fan us really loud in mine.

Drakino has the SS51G. I didn't replace any fans yet. I think the noise level is very acceptable.

It is definatly quieter than my old tower with no covers but it would be nice it the noise level was lower.

Ok, now you've convinced me, and at less than $100 I guess I can't go wrong (and it's pretty damned small too). My handwriting sucks, and I hate printing on labels, printing directly to the DVD/CD is the way to go. Getting a clean/professional looking label that everyone can read every time is worth $100.

So, now if I buy one and it sucks, are you going to refund me my money?

I always just run my CDs through my laser printer. The only caveat is, you have to grab the CD right away when it comes out of the printer, put it on a flat surface and stack some heavy books or the like onto it to flatten it back out because the heat from the fuser makes it very malleable, and the fuser roller tends to make it curl right up into a tube.

And if you believe that, get hold of me right away because I have a really swell deal for a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to offer you.

Not sure about CDs but I knew somebody once that pushed a 5 1/4 floppy through a dot matrix printer...

Unsurprisingly, the disk didn't work afterwards.

You want to know the scary thing, I have seen this done with an 8" floppy. Afterwards it was formatted and worked, although nothing important was put onto it, just in case.

Admittedly, the print pattern was set to avoid the holes in the cover, but still - not bad amusement. And it did leave us with much more interesting placemats.

Ok, a quick update: I got the CW-50 today, and I have to say, it's pretty sweet for only being $90. I've only done three labels as of yet, but it is definitely better than my handwriting, and faster than I thought it would be. Overall a good, small, investment.
