Is there a way to do a mass tagging of mp3's. I have my music sorted into folders by genres, then artists, then albums. I have mp3 tag studio but can only get it to do one folder at a time, it wont do a folder within a folder. All of my filenames are right and i want to just do a mass auto tag from filename to my entire music directory. I dont want to have to do each folder one at a time because I have hundreds and hundreds of folders. Is there an easy way to do this with mp3 tag studio? And if not, is there other software that can do what i want?

The program I use for all my tagging needs is MP3ext. It's a bit of a unique way of tagging, in that it's a shell extension rather than a regular program. You select your MP3's in Windows Explorer, right click on them (or use Alt-Enter) and go to the "MP3 Info" tab in the properties dialog. But just because it's in a little properties window doesn't make it any less featured! It can generate tags from filenames (using regular expressions, even), rename files based on tag info, etc. It even has a feature where the ToolTip for your MP3's is info about the MP3, so all you need to do is mouse over it to get tag info, bitrate, etc.

It doesn't have EVERY tagging feature, but it has all the ones I need. If you use your own filename scheme like I do, you'll need to write a regular expression to parse out the tag info from the filename, but once that's done, it's automatic. You can even write little batch files (called Actions) which operate on the files, do custom renaming, whatever.

I personally think a shell extension/property page fits the MP3 tag concept more than does an entire program that you need to fire up... You're editing a file's metadata, really... So I love this program and have used it for many years now. Best of all it's free. Give it a shot.

I have no problem getting MP3 tag studio to do multiple folders within folders. In fact, I'm using its Mass Set Tags feature this very evening on multiple folders. Perhaps you just need to mess around with it a little more and figure out how to do that.

The user interface of MP3 Tag Studio is a little hard to learn at first, but it is very powerful once you know how to use it.

I've tried messing around with it because I assumed it should have the ability to do folders within a folder. But whenever I try and do a folder that is full of folders, it just says "Number of entries found: 0" in the preview mode. How do I get it to recognize the files inside sub-folders?

Well, I use the shell extension. I set up an existing filename spec in its "mass set tags from filenames screen". Then I rightclick on a folder in Explorer and use the shell extension "MP3 Tag Studio/Retag assumed format" and select the desired spec.

I'm sure there's a way to do it within its UI, the trick is to figure out how to select a folder instead of selecting a group of files. Dunno exactly how to do it that way though.

I don't have mp3tag studio open at the moment but from what I remember, over by the "Execute" button there's usually a checkbox and "incl. sub" (or something like that) next to it. If you check that box, then it'll go through all the sub folders.

Yeah, you're right Ajay. I just checked it out and I discovered the "Include Subdirs" option in the user interface, right under the EXECUTE button. Also, you must have "Custom File Selection Mode" turned off. But then it works.

I cant believe I couldn't find that. I spent so much time looking through all the different menus and tabs and everything and never did see that. I guess today just hasn't been a good day for me. Oh well, thanks for the help guys.

I wrote a perl script which forks id3v2, but if you're not using a unix variant, I suspect this isn't real helpful.

Tag&Rename. That's all you need to know. It's an AMAZING ID3 tagger. Everything is driven by variables and regular expressions. Just try it, it's amazing.
