Okay, this is one I've wanted to know for a long time, and is used frequently in web pages. How do I take two images and sort of run them together? You know, like make their edges overlap and fade into each other? I know I'm describing this terribly, but I hope you understand me. I can't find any examples right now, unfortunately.

This is only similar to the question I asked some time ago about creating transparency in images.

I suppose it depends on the image editor you were using, but with something like Photoshop, you'd put each image in a separate layer, select an area that overlaps the two and apply an alpha-channel gradient to each layer in the opposite direction from each other.

I'd need some more information or an example, as I'm not quite sure I'm following your question.

That's what I was talking about. I'll try that as I have Photoshop here at work. I'll have to see if Paint Shop Pro can do that at home.

Okay, I have no idea how to do what you're talking about. I've got an image with two layers and I can select an area of the image for blending the two, but I don't know how to do this alpha channel stuff, and the Photoshop help file isn't great.

I think this is exactly what you're looking for.

And to add to that, if the resulting gradient isn't exactly what you are looking for, keep in mind that you can select the masking thumbnail (which is located directly next to the image thumbnail in the Layer pallette) and paint areas of white and black (white being transparent and black being a mask) with the paintbrush.

Using the layer mask is the easiest way. You could use the gradient fill tool to do large sections quickly, but running along the edge with a large soft brush. you can make the blend a bit more random.

Just so ya know... You can do ALL KINDS of cool things with layer masking. It doesn't have to be a plain gradient either. Example attached. (French Marketplace in New Orleans)
