Side note: Parts Express is owned or afilliated with Mendelson's Liquidation Outlet in Dayton, Ohio. If you have never been to Mendelson's before, it is a wonderful, magical place They have an entire warehouse floor of surplus electrical and electronics junque, and an entire room dedicated to tubes. You can order some of their stock online but most of it is so unorganized you have to go there and dig for treasure.

To get up to the third floor where all the electronics are, you have to take a freight elevator that's operated by one of the older owners of the store. He just sits there and runs the elevator up and down while reading magazines. It's wild.

Why does the list of german words used by english speaking people increase? Not every day, but still it seems to increase. Dreck is another one I've never heard before from an english tongue. As an austrian I've always been wondering for the reason. I mean it seems logical that we do 'import' english words into our german vocabulary, given the fact that computer terminology is english and most lyrics are english too.
But,... why in the world, do you guys use german?

It's mostly Yiddish, from our significant Jewish contingent.

However, dreck has been in English for a while; Merriam-Webster claims since 1922.

I'll give you a quick list of such words that appear outside areas with large Jewish concentrations:

bupkes* - nothing
chutzpah* - brazenness
farklempt (largely due to a schetch on Saturday Night Live) - choked up
kosher - proper
kvetch* - complain
Mazel Tov - congratulations
mensch - salt of the earth
meshuggina - crazy person
mishmash** - hodgepodge
nosh* - eat, snack
plotz - burst
schlemiel - person who does stupid things (mostly from the Laverne and Shirley TV show theme)
schlemozzel - unlucky person (also mostly from the Laverne and Shirley TV show theme)
schlep* - carry
schvitz - sweat, steambath
schmutz - dirt
tuchis** - butt

The ones with asterisks are probably the most common and might be used without thinking about them being Yiddish. The double-asterisked ones might be used unaware that they're Yiddish.

Hmm, I wasn't aware that dreck was in fact Yiddish. Other than the apparantly Yiddish words that we frequently use (meshuggina (we use this quite alot but with an -e ending instead of -ina and as adjective, crazy) and kosher), judging from your list there seems to be either a bunch of german words that were adopted by the Jewish or a bunch of Yiddish words that got adopted by the german speaking part of the world.

schlep - slightly altered spelling: schlepp, same meaning
schvitz - slightly altered spelling: schwitz, same meaning
mishmash - slightly altered spelling: mischmasch, same meaning
schmutz - same meaning
nosh - reminds me of naschen, same meaning

the german mensch = human beeing ... It's quite intresting to see that this means 'salt of the earth' in Yiddish. Isn't mankind self-righteous?

I've heard schmeckle a few times. I definitely don't know how to spell that one.

Yiddish is largely based on German plus a lot of Hebrew, but it uses the Hebrew alphabet. It's really a creole language. There has been no definitive transliteration from that alphabet to the Roman alphabet used by English and German (and Spanish, French, etc.), so it's impossible to misspell them in our alphabet. You get the general idea by my approximations, though.

I'm sure I did forget a few very common ones. They were kinda mostly off the top of my head.

BTW, in my experience, ``mensch'' is used very inflected, very emphasized, and usually with the adjective ``real'', also emphasized. As in ``He's a real mensch''. I'm sure in Yiddish, it probably also means simply human being, but it has that other meaning, too.

And the vowel in ``nosh'' would be the same vowel in ``naschen'', so it's pretty much the same word with the infinitive -en ending removed. In fact, many Yiddish verbs use German endings, so I'm sure nosht and noshen would occur.

I have a question for those more knowledgeable about speakers than I.

Is it possible to use those subs, put them in some sort of flat box, and stick them in a home theater setup? I would love to line a bunch of those up underneath my couch!

Yes it's possible, but you need to wire them in series so that you get ~8 Ohms, as most home systems use 8 Ohms as their standard impedence. Most cars use 2 or 4 ohms. So you'd need 4 or 2 speakers in series to get about 8 ohms. Some amps have a switch on the back to change the impedence to 4 Ohms. Basically, if you use too many ohms, the speakers are too quiet, too few, and you could destroy your amp.

Oh, for the record, 8 ohm speakers generally sound cleaner, and require more power to run, hence they are usually used in the home, whereas 2 ohm speakers sound louder but are sloppier, and as such are used in cars, where you're less likely to notice any difference.

Hi Laura, it's right across the street from the Dayton Dragon's stadium, I think the street is 1st or 2nd street. It is definately worth going at least once!
