A question to ex-SB people: does anyone know what happened to ProGear Transmeta-based Linux tablet PC? Is it still alive in some form? Do you know of anything similar?

There is a group on yahoo for the progear tablets. One guy is planning a memory upgrade for them.

This tablet has caught my eye though and comes with a faster processor and 256mb ram and a 20gb HD.

Anyone know abou these tablets? The specs seem better than the progear but I don't see any forums dedicated to them.

Thanks. I found about ProGear on LinuxDevices. It would fit some of my customer's needs perfectly (light, customizable, multiple wireless connectivity...). There are also these Norwegian guys, Siemens produced something similar but only DECT-conncted... Anyone has any experience with those [gasp] M$-promoted tablets?

I think it died a death a year or so ago.

Have you found any progear like devices for sale? it seems there was talk a couple years ago that these tablets would take over the world, but all the manufacturers EOL'd the products. Only thing is I can't find any floating around (ebay, etc). I'm looking for a touch screen device preferably running windows. I have a linux 64mb progear that i want to throw against the wall. the norwegian product looks interesting, but they appear to be looking for enterprise (read: bulk) customers. Anyone have any leads?

My customers are (hopefully) bulk customers, too

True, Norwegians charge around $2500 for a sample of their device (bulk price is $500-$1000, depending on configuration), and seem to be in early ramp up phase (with only a couple of customers - an American hospital, for example).

These products are like fireflies, going on and off all the time - you can find five or six of them at any given time, but two months leter it will be different set of five or six...

I have a linux 64mb progear that i want to throw against the wall.

Why?

To be fair, it is a mixture of the device's problems and my own ineptitude. First, i don't know how to work with linux so i find the lack of menus and options on the GUI very frustrating. Second, the device is painfully slow and crashes often. Third, i was using the device as a way to stream music wirelessly from one room to the other when the Real player that came pre-loaded decided to crap out. Now i get half the song before it mangles the stream. Since, i dont' know linux prompts (at all) i can't change the browser or the real music player. I've decided to look for other options for my music streaming needs and hope someday I am able to learn linux well enough to make the progear useful.

we've recently been working with the new HP/compaq line of tablets... at 1 Ghz with a 30gig drive starting at 1600 bucks it's not a bad deal. They aren't as fast as you'd expect at 1Ghz due to the transmeta crusoe processor. But definately cheaper then most of the new tablets hitting the market, they look cool, and are very functional/stable. You can also get built in wireless and slapp a bunch o ram in these things.... I have to say they are pretty cool.
