I'm really surprised no one has posted anything about this. I can't wait for it to come out. Sony needs to step up its rollout plan.

Is there a general aversion to Sony on the board, i remember reading some not so nice comments in the past?

anyone have the linux kit for the current PS2?

I will get one just because I collect this crap but I can't see actually using the PVR part unless it uses the tivo software or clones it really good. Plus I'm sure I won't like the remote better than the tivo one.

Who knows if it will even be released outside of Japan anyway. Maybe they are just testing to see how the all in one concept will go over and incorporate it into the PS3 before selling it anywhere else.

The choice of name is kind of silly.

Here's the thing: I don't want a Playstation. That summs up my whole philosophy on this.

See, it looks like a lot of these manufacturers are insisting that everyone wants one thing that does everything. That's not always true. I've always been of the camp that thinks "Sure, it does 5 things, but it doesn't do any of them well." Sure, sometimes it does some things well, but maybe they're not what you wanted. Like Matt said, if it doesn't work as well as a Tivo, will you ditch the Tivo in favor of having a single device?

So for the most part, I'm a single-use/single-device kind of guy. I'm sure I'll be proved wrong, though.

See, i like the concept of one device doing multiple tasks. i already use my ps2 as a dvd player, but would love this because it's a progressive scan dvd player/recorder built into a ps2 which is even more appealing to me.

i do agree with you re tivo, that will simply be hard to beat. here in the uk thomson quit makeing tivos just before it launched a similar product of its own. since sony OEMs tivos in the US perhaps it learned a thing or two about the functionality required. thomson is droping the ball because it insists on using gemstar's epg which is rubish. the best feature on tivo is its epg and this is amazingly underestimated by other CE vendors and most tech writers. you never hear about this in reviews just recording hours and silver fascias.

sorry for my rant, but if the pvr/epg comes anywhere close to my tivo, i may have to retire it.

I suppose my only other argument would be the aspect that with single use devices, you only have to pay to replace one at a time.

And if one breaks, you're not without the use of the others while it's being fixed.

And if you have to replace it, you don't have to pay to replace five functions, only one.

i have never had a problem paying extra for tivo b/c this is such a useful function.

those are both very good points. i was thinking in terms of space, simplicity and power . I have 12 or so cords going into various power strips behind my tv. not pretty. also i'm always on the edge when my 1yr nephew comes over. i'd love less cabling unless he rips something out. i don't' want to spending the rest of the afternoon figuring out my set up again.

another good thing about the tivo that will be hard to give up is the hackablitiy of it. being able to add hard drive space, wireless networking etc are all great options that will not be possible with a product from a big CE vendor.
