I've been doing the same thing with Trillian for a long time already, and with Odigo before that. So it's not particularly important to me. But yeah, it's interesting.

I used to use Trillian... then discovered by using a simple program called tril kill (a small VB app, looked like some kind of weekend programming project)... you can take the trillian.ini file run the app against it and you have every password for that persons internet email accounts. Trillians encryption is so weak it's scary. Needless to say it came in handy to discover a few of my Ex's affairs.... But if you have nothing to hide or no one can access your machine locally your all good...

Gleaning saved passwords from a local machine is pretty much do-able for any software, not just Trillian. Depends on the OS, but I'm sure that even using ICQ or AIM, or just about any e-mailer, that there's hacking software that'll reverse-engineer passwords for you as long as you've got access to the local box.

Definately hear ya there. It's just Trillian seemed a bit too easy. Then again I guess if you have local access to a machine it's pretty much yours to do with what you will, if you have a bit of time. In my case everything I needed to find out was clear in black and white in the log file.....

AIM and ICQ have been using the same protocol for quite some time, IIRC. I wouldn't be surprised at all if you could do this with previous versions of AIM by simply typing in the user's ICQ number instead of their AIM screen name.

I tried that back when it first became available. It might have been a smarterchild kind of thing, I don't really remember. Either way, my last friend still using ICQ never really forgave me for it, as it attempted redeliver the message every time she signed on. With the logging of deadaim, I've lost the real reason I used to use ICQ (And got tabbed IMs as a bonus).

I've been using ICQ for years so far, and simply hate to install two messengers, but sometimes I had to.. Anyway it seems that only ICQ Lite (which I don't like, see below) is capable of linking to AOL accounts, am I right?

Personally, what I really like in ICQ is that you can have contacs "floating" when they come on line. This means very little space taken on the desktop, and ONLY when it is required; no horrible contact list on one side. That is all a really need from a messanger, plus file transfer and ability to be invisible some times. ICQ Lite, like all other messengers (AFAIK), does not have a "floating" feature...

Trillian does, and its quite nifty. AIM/ICQ/IRC/MSN/Yahoo, all in one window, or floating windows I've been using it for at least 6 months now.

I gave it a try, and it definitely improved since I tried it a long time ago. Still, I felt a little bit "lost" in its gui. I have to spend few minutes to configure it and see how this floating windows feature works. Basically, all I want it to do is this:

A user in my contact list comes on line. So a small rectangle, as big as the contact's name, pops up where I left it last time the guy came on line. Is that possible?

I don't know of any program which does exactly as you describe, taym, but there are some scripting features in Trillian that allow for a popup window to appear on the screen when a specific user comes online. It's the "Set Alert" feature of Trillian, and it can be set on a per-user basis:

In the picture I attached, you see there are some contacts floating at the top of the screen. I find that layout very very useful. It doesn't take much of the screen, and those contacts simply pop up when the user is on line, then they disappear. Also, you can move them anywhere you want and the save their last position so that next time that person comes on line his contacs reappears where it was.

Here's the option in ICQ I am referring to.

In Trillian, you can float a user very easily (drag him to your desktop), but I don't know if you can choose to float them only when online.

Yea, I just tried to see if they would hide when they sign off, and they didn't. So i'm wrong. I'm almost positive they did hide at some point.

Does it have anything to do with Trillian's "Docking" feature? I never understood that feature. It says you can't dock and have the system tray icon at the same time, so I don't use docking.

GAIM is also a very nice alternative. It isn't as resource hungry as Trillian.

Edit: There are two plugin APIs as well, C and Perl. Very nice, indeed.

I don't use docking either. I guess the docking just makes your buddy list stay ontop of everything, or something like that. If you just drag it to an edge of your screen, it should dock. It did for me, and i have the system tray icon on.

After i came back from dinner, the floating buddy i had setup signed offline, this is what it looked like.

The one thing i really like about trillian, is the skins you can use. I switch my skins maybe at least once a month. I have like 6 i really like. This is probably why its a little resource hungry, but it uses less resources that AIM+MSN+ICQ. I just checked and its only using 3mb ram, at one point i noticed it was using 9mb ram.

I can't get it to work either, meaning that contacs stay on when users logoff. I don't think that can be done in this version, but I'll keep an eye on future versions. I didn't know Trillian was so nice now! Thanks guys for the help!
