Does it matter what software you use to burn mp3's onto a CD?

I recently bought a new PC and the cd's i burn with mp3's will not play on my Sony cdx 450 mp Head Unit in my car. When I burn them on the old PC they work fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Ed

It probably isn't the software itself that is causing the problem. More likely is that the default settings for the new software produce CDs that the player can't read.

The player probably can't read unclosed or multisession disks, or something.

I thought of that...but i am able to play cd's that have been burned at various times on my old PC as mp3's.

I am using Windows XP (hate it) and this has been the first time I burned CD's with this OS for this HU. As a side note, my other car has a brand new Pioneer HU in it and it reads these XP burned CD's just fine!

Would you know how to configure the burner within XP?

GRrrrrrr

Hmmm... Does XP's built in burner do real tracks / sessions, or is it trying to do a packet /block write?

Perhaps the new software creates packet-written (UDF) discs and the CD player only understands ISO9660 discs?

Is it using the same CD writer as it could be the CD writer drive itself. My Toshiba at full speed makes audio CDs that some players just refuse to work with. My old Yamaha drive however works fine but it only goes at 8x.

I know they're audio CDs and you're burning data CDs but it may be a possibility. Try burning at a lower speed to see if it affects it.

XP does not really allow you too many optins...i cant even find out what standard it uses when burning..i think the head unit, being 2 years old, and the pc, being 1 year old, are not compatable with regards to this whole process. I have been searching the net for info on this but found nothing.

i dont even think xp allows me the possibility to change the burning speeds (at least I cant figure it out!)

Definitely - I have one CD player which is generally brilliant, and always works with commercial CDs, but to get it to play any of my home-made compilation CDs I need to burn at 2x or less. Admittedly I tend to do that most of the time anyway for my backups, as they do tend to last a lot longer when burned at low speeds.

Ed, try reading Andy McFadden's CD-recordable FAQ here. Perhaps your questions are answered there.

The burner built into XP should burn ISO9660 1 and 2 discs normally (it doesn't burn until the end and then does it all at once - packet written discs usually get formatted first and then burn each file as it is dragged over).

However, Microsoft had a problem which made discs, which appeared correct, but did not play in some car MP3 players.
Microsoft have an article on this problem in their knowledge base - http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;Q320174 - it has a resolution in there, which is worth a try...

There was also another issue (something to do with writing the path table after the data rather than before...) that I know Pioneer have a workaround for in their modern players, but your Sony may not have.

If you use a separate burner program (Nero etc) it should work fine and produce "proper" ISO9660 level 1/2 discs.

Thanks for the responses!

It turned out it was just the software that came loaded with the PC..installed some new softward and all is fine now...was thinking of burning all of my mp3's that is on the Rio onto CD's until/when I can get my Rio repared...but it would take too much time and effort (20+gigs).....

never know what you got till its gone!
