I know this has been brought up in a couple of posts in the past, but has there been any further discussion about adding nested playlists to the Karma? With 100GB+ of music I usually use this as a selection criteria for purchasing an mp3 player, with empeg for the car and the linksys wireless media b for the home, but I made an exception with purchasing the Karma with the hopes this functionality would be developed. Thanks for any info anyone can provide!

Probably "I shall", and a restatement of the original post would have worked.

My point was that the word "might" would have been a better choice than "will". I really hope they do, as this is the one big feature in my mind that keeps the empeg ahead of everything else. Just because everyone else does the "Soup" views dosen't mean it has to be the only way.
But I guess only time will tell. My fear is still that the Karma support will go the way of the Central and Receiver, and hearing comments like this don't help to put this fear to rest :-(

I was shocked when i used a mortal Mp3 player since they did not have nested playlists
It is so logical a way to go anything you use after the empeg just seems crippled
Okay you need to have maybe a wee bit more effort when uploading songs but the difference in selection and playback is profound.
There has been debates on here onto the best way to organsie your playlists which would be impossible with any other player. the abilty to have one song in multiple playlists and being able to copy playlists around the playlist structure makes the empeg far more powerful than anything else i have seen.
Sorry but to me that is possibly the killer feature of the empeg.

I just got my rio Karma in the mail today. This thing is super small and very cool. Sounds quality is great as well. I'm telling you, if this thing had nested playlists, it would be embodied perfection.

I agree. I've been using a Karma for a couple of days now too, and while I abolutely love this little thing and haven't had ANY problems with it, these are the things that I miss the most while using it :
1) Hierarchical playlists. Absolutely, hands down ! I really hope that the Empeg guys will keep their promise and implement this in a pending firmware update.
2) A remote of some sort, preferably with a little LCD screen built-in. It would definitely ease using the Karma while it's in my pockets.
3) The Empeg's search features. I guess this can't be done on the Karma, but that doesn't mean that I don't miss them. IMO, the Empeg's search engine is one of it's most powerful features.
And is it possible to insert/append a track while playing another playlist (like it is with the Empeg ?) It's probably possible, but I haven't found out how to do it yet.
Oh, and we NEED a decent carrying bag or case for it. That supplied pouch is....erm...well... crap essentially. Certainly unworthy for such a great product!

Not to be a fly in the ointment, but if/when hierarchical playlists get implemented, the developers are going to have to be very careful to make them “invisible” to users who don’t want to use them. Hierarchies are not intuitive to everyone, and the common person who doesn’t want all of the bells and whistles might get confused if they’re forced to deal with nested playlists. Working helpdesk I run into users every day who just don’t “get” the concept of a directory structure. The best they can do is understand, “I’m going to copy this file to my C drive”, and even that is pushing my luck at times.
This shouldn’t be a barrier to implementing hierarchical playlists, just a consideration. As long as you can do them or not, the functionality should be transparent to most users. My wife probably wouldn’t care if they’re there are not, but like others here I’d really struggle without them. The empeg was my first mp3 player; trying to use something more “flattened” out (like my PC based players) just drives me nuts.
I’m saving for a Karma now and hope to be able to get one in the next six months. I really hope the hierarchical playlists are there, because that will probably be the thing that pushes me over the edge when I finally have the $$$.

Here is the response Rob gave when I asked how to do it.
Go to Now Playing view (press the stick), use the wheel to scroll to the position at which you want to insert, press the wheel, utilise the menu that appears.
Did you try to find it in the manual I couldn't find it in there.

You make a good point about keeping the heirarchal playlists simple or "invisible" so that people who don't want to use them do not have to. The way to deal with this is to create like a "browse folders" option under all of the other id3 tag soup list options. For example, the listing after genre could be folders, or browse folders. I use the linksys media b wireless adapter to stream music wirelessly to my home theatre system at home, and this is the way they handle incorporating both soup views and the capacity to browse by heirarchal playlists. Works quite nicely.

Thanks a lot Matt !
Yup, that works just fine !
I also couldn't find it in the manual, but I must be honest and say that I didn't exactly read it very thorough.

Maybe they can add a switch to RMM which enables/disables hierarchal playlists, and then leave that switch off by default ? That way, it would only be used by users that know what it is, and know how to use it.

Well, at the risk of being branded a heretic and burned at the stake, I have to comment on the iriver ihp-120 and their nested playlists. I actually picked up one of these mp3 players and have had about 24 hours to tool around with it. They have really solid nested playlists navigation. You can either search by ID3 tag, or you can essentially search the device as you would search a hard drive, navigating through various levels of directories and subdirectories. Transferring files is a snap as well. The iriver basically shows up as a removable hard drive and you can simply drag and drop your music files where you want them to be. Sound quality is very solid. Navigating is easy, and the in-line remote is very convenient. The iriver has an FM tuner, allows for recording voice through a built in microphone or included lapelle microphone. While the overall size of the device is smaller, it has a bit of a larger footprint due to its increased length (compensated for by decreased thickness compared to karma). In any case, I don't want to rain on anyone's parade here who has purchased the Karma, I think the Karma is a great player, but for those waiting in the wings, checking out the iriver is worthwhile. I think the iriver behaves a whole lot more like my empeg in file transfer and navigation than the karma does.
