For the past few months I've been looking at getting a truck. I finally found it this past weekend. The thing is so close to what I originally went shopping for it's scary!
In all the excitement of finding my new toy I forgot about my poor MKIIa and how long I will be without it's graces.
Tonight I have to put the stock stereo back into the car I'm trading and I'm dreading every minute of it. I'll probably have to be without my little friend untill this weekend .
Does everyone feel bad for me yet?

I made the mistake of ripping the entire last Harry Potter book down while my wife was recovering from surgery. Needless to say, once she started there was no going back so I had to leave my empeg with her so she could finish listening to it (I mean, how could I say "I know you're bedridden, in pain, bored to tears, and have no means of finishing this audio book without my empeg, but I have to have tunes while I drive"?). I didn't even realize until that moment that we didn't have an easily portable CD player in the house! So I feel your pain, though at least you know soon your friend will be with you once again.

That's what the Karma is for!!! Yeah it is. If I had a dollar for every time she said, "just buy me a Karma" I could have actually afforded one!

I'm going to have this problem when we replace the car. Buh.
I went today and looked. I debated leaving the amp, tuner and sled in it in case it could be repaired. Then I noticed the floor by the firewall in front of the driver's seat had been deformed in the accident.
I have the tuner, amp and sled for the next car. I'll eat the price of the speakers, probably.

When driving with mortal head unit you will
Be confused by lack of track names
Be totally bewildered by why something that does so little has so many buttons
swear never to part with empeg
Try and skip tracks on radio
have to use these funny square plastic things that are vaguely box shaped with some holes in them. Though they look low tech they ain't as they some how hold an incredable amount of nice brown plastic ribbon.
have great difficult getting the search functions to work
And notice they have this bug where shuffle only plays about 12 different tracks but tony still sayes this is something to do with non randon numbers but i ain't convinced

Whoa... that reminds me, I have a 200 CD changer and MD recorder taking up space in my entertainment rack! I don't even know if they're plugged in!

I've been driving my old Ford Escort lately (trying to drive it into the ground because I'm not able to sell it). Instead of busting out my old "strange black boxes with two holes and ribbon), I just listen to college radio (the less commercials the better).
Every time I hear a track I don't recognize, which is ALWAYS, I looking down at the deck only to be greeted by "103.3"; the radio station.
Oh well, at least college radio is similar to my empeg in that it rarely plays the same song twice; EVER.
Now, WHO did I see that had an empeg hooked up via a cassette adapter and cigarette lighter power adapter thing? Off to search the BBS I go.

Actually, my brother-in-law just showed me his little contraption today... He has a Sony cassette to minijack adapter feeding his OEM stero and a power invertor supplying power. Works like a charm. It's not great for every day stuff because the empeg will slide around the car, but for road trips, it can't be beat because it can go in any car with a tape deck.

Yeah, I've got one of those. I've also got one for my iPod. Unfortunately, more and more hire cars come with CD head units, rather than tape decks, so it's harder to use them.
Last time I was in the US, first stop on leaving San Fransisco in the hire car was a music store to buy some CDs -- I can't stand US radio.

I've been unable to use my empeg since March when I changed cars to something that I can't easily install an empeg into (bad planning)
Fortunately, I've just bought a new empeg holder in the shape of an MX5 - just need to get it installed now....

More than once I looked over at it so I could find out the track information, only to be told "06". This happens to me every time I'm in my wife's care (really need to get her that Karma!). When I first got my empeg I thought that track information was a neat trick, but not something that was really necessary (I didn't even mess with mp3s pre-empeg, so it wasn't something I was used to). Now track information has joined the list of other things like the "Mouse wheel" that I never thought were that big a deal, but now when I don't have them the world just doesn't seem right.

At least you had radio. My amp died and it took me 3 months to get a replacement and find time to install it. On the plus side, when I finally got everything working, it was like Christmas! I just drove and drove and drove...with a big smile on my face!

I was using that setup for about a year and a half. Honestly, the quality degradation wasn't noticeable (not in my noisy Nissan NX, anyway). It was just a bit inconvenient to have to plug everything in manually, instead of sliding it into the dock. I recommend getting plenty of one amp fuses for the cigarette lighter adapter, though, because one accidental touch of the power lead to the case ground will blow a fuse right smart. And if you're not using a fused adapter, then beware...
(Now going through week 2 of Empeg Withdrawal - the whimpering, twitching phase).

I know how this feels. Ripped mine out at the weekend, awaiting delivery of new car.
I keep looking down to check the name of the song, and it isn't there anymore !!

That's me in the corner, that's me in the spotlight - but I can't remember which thread!
Cigarette lighter plug and Empeg size plug, together with a length of lead (couple of dabs of solder - even for an oldie with shaking hands, that's not too hard) 3.5mm socket to 2 line plugs adaptor: All cheap and cheerful from your local Maplins. Make sure that the lighter plug has the right value fuse. Cassette adaptor widely available, but probably cheapest at Maplins. It ain't perfect, but it's a whole lot better than a cassette - whatever that is!

Meatballman had found a power cable from Radio Shack that was to specs, and if your rental car has a cd player you could always use a rf transmitter.
