Now that number portability is in efrfect for the top 100 metro areas in the US, are you going to switch?
I've wanted to move away from SprintPCS for years but my number has been the limiting factor. I can't wait to switch as soon as I find a better plan with better phones.

you damn skippy. I've had the same number for many years now, and I really like the number, but I hate Cingular.
Good riddance.

I am going to wait a few months for them to fix the inevitable administrative screwups that will happen, since only a small minority of providers are actually prepared to handle phone number portability, and even those are probably going to be overwhelmed by the number of people who want to switch. That being said, I'm not thrilled with my current service, and have been out of my initial contract period for quite some time now... So as soon as a good plan comes by, I'm on it. The best thing about all this is it's going to force the providers to work hard to get our business.

All I want is decent coverage and a good bluetooth phone with cheap data. My contract is up in January but I'll just renew with at&t if they'll give me a SE T616 and drop their data prices. Otherwise I'll be checking out T Mobile to see what they can do for me.

yeah, I may wait a month or so to switch, and see if providers become a bit more competitive with their plans.
edit: hey neat-o! I'm addicted to the BBS. (finally)

I was hoping this thread would be about a specific question regarding portability...
If one has two cell telephones with two different companies... Can you transfer one to the other?
Specifics: Jenny owned an AT&T phone (Nokia hardware). The reception sucked, so she got a new Verizon phone (LG hardware). She's hanging onto both phones for a little while.
When she finally kills the servics on the AT&T phone, can she have her Verizon phone switched to the AT&T number?

Yup. Just like you can have the same number assigned to a different phone with the same provider. Now you can switch the phone and/or the provider and still keep the number.

Cool. Not sure if she's actually going to do that or not, the actual number itself is cooler on the new phone (the digits are easier to memorize, at least for me).
Wonder if she can get a "the number has been changed" message on the old number? Dunno if that's part of the "portability" law or not.

While it's possible, if you've already got a verizon contract I'm not sure how willing they'll be to have you transfer in a number for an existing contract. It's really one of those special cases that you'll have to ask about. Then, if they give you the wrong answer, you call back and ask again. You repeat until you get fed up, or they tell you what you want to hear.

In the past, when I ditched Cingular for T-Mobile, I kept both phones active for a while, with the voicemail on the old phone playing a message (my voice) giving the new number.

Ditto here. I'll have been month-to-month with AT&T WS for 7 years (and 3 phones) as of January. It's time for a change....

Yeah. The at&t GSM network has been less than thrilling, and the fact that they can't come up with a reasonable data plan doesn't make me want to stay while they build it out.. If T-Mobile's sidekick had bluetooth, i'd have bought one months ago.
