Since most of those download / file shares are now not the way to do it, what is the best way to get MP3s? I have a pretty good size collection, and would like to get more so I can put them on my soon to be mine rio! Thanks!

IMO Best Buy has the best selection of CDs in the retail business. Im sure thats what you meant and you werent asking where you could download music

The "best" way to get MP3s is different to different people. My idea of the "best" way to get MP3s is to create them myself, by ripping my own CDs. That way I can be assured of a perfect rip, and not have to worry about random scratches and blips which, at high volumes, could damage my speakers. The favorite setup around here tends to be EAC -> LAME.

As for file sharing services, I'm sure someone around here has an idea which are better or more popular.

I have been getting my cds mostly directly from the artist/label lately.

I took the plunge and prepaid for 1500 Mb of files from ALLOFMP3.COM,cost me $15.00 via Paypal. You can have your tracks cutom encoded using LAME and the -alt presets up to insane, MPEG-1 Layer 3 - MP3, Windows Media Audio - WMA, Ogg Vorbis - OGG, MusePack - MPC, MPEG-4 AAC. So far I can't complain. For $.01/1Mb it is the best deal considering a majority of the tracks can be custom encoded....but not all. It takes them a little long to get some of the newest music though. I ripped a couple of tracks from the original CD and then had the same tracks encoded from -ALT PRESET EXTREME and downloaded them from ALLOFMP3.COM and could not tell a difference in sound quality. To me it is a helluva lot better alternative to I-Tunes or BuyMusic or Napster.

Is AllOfMp3.Com actually legal? It looks a bit dodgy to me and I see they no longer take Paypal.

I think it's legal, but it's very shady. They have been around for at least a year now.

Maybe the long arm of the RIAA does not reach into Mother Russia.

My guess is that it is not legal in the USA.

Funny that the RIAA hasn't come out and said it's illegal. It must be in a really gray area. I also came across a spanish music site that is pretty cheap too but might be more legal...

I have to say that is a pretty compelling price point. A quick grep and du on some of my collection suggests that 1500MB is about 280 tracks at 192k.

The legal issues are interesting. I'd bet that it's legal in Russia, and that it's legal for us to subscribe to their club, thus leaving the RIAA in the sticky position of not wanting to draw attention to it. I notice on their quick guide page a note about observing copyright law pursuant to some license (number given). Obviously that could be bogus, but I doubt it.

Here is a comparative chart of legal MP3 sites. At the bottom is a review that (assuming it is true) sheds a bit more light on the legality situation.

Copyright organizations in Russia, unlike most of their colleagues abroad, are willing to close favorable deals with online music services.

The copyrights for downloads in Russia are more or less equal to the rights radio stations have to pay for broadcasting music.

The agreements Allofmp3 has signed with Russian Organization for Multimedia & Digital Systems make this service fully legal. Under the license agreement Allofmp3 pays out fees for downloaded materials that are subject to the Russian Federation Copyright And Related Rights Law.

We can understand that due to the current situation in the US people are very careful. There is an interesting discussion going on about Allofmp3 in the TechIMOforum. Check this thread and read or join the discussion.

Allofmp3 has also been noticed by former users of Emusic. Read about their experiences in this forum and join the discussion.

More interesting discussions can be found at: www.diablo.co.za and www.avsforum.com

One thing you must take in mind. Using a service like Allofmp3 is different from using Kazaa and other P2P programs. You are not the one that is distributing music. Any legal action will be taken against Allofmp3. It's highly unlikely that users can or will ever be prosecuted if Allofmp3 is declared illegal by a court verdict.

The RIAA knows about Allofmp3 but has not taken any action so far.

Well, that's enough for me, I'm going to give it a shot.

Before seeing this thread I signed up for allofmp3 only to get a call the next day by my credit card company of a possible fraud attept. LOL.. Good thing I have more then one credit card or there would have been no downloading last night for me.

Anyways, over night I downloaded over 2gigs in albums. So far it has been a great service, but I reduced my 30 days to 3 overnight because of using thier encoding. Now I figure I will just get the rest of the albums I wanted tonight at their normal 128kbps. Everything worked out though, I got the ones I really wanted in 256kbps encoding which is good enough for me. You can't beat getting over $300 in retail music (all encoded and tagged for you) for $15... unless you go the "illegal" route.

I found that allofmp3.com has some free stuff to download so I tried that first. I downloaded one album that I have in vinyl and have been meaning to encode. I found that half the songs are missing the last 10 or 15 seconds... It also took it about 3 hours to download one album's worth of music at 128kbps encoding. In the end I just deleted everything... off to encode the vinyl.
