Yeah, the season is over, but I must think of next year and the future.

The favorite (well, second favorite) Christmas movie of my parents and I is "A Child's Christmas in Wales." It's a wonderful adaptation of Dylan Thomas's story, and Denholm Elliott reads the story so well. It was always our tradition that we watch the movie right before bed on Christmas Eve.

Well, now I'm interested in finding more copies of it. In particular, I'm wondering if it's on DVD. I thought that since I can't find it online anywhere, perhaps those of you across the Atlantic might be more familiar with the movie (which I don't think was ever very popular in the US), and know whether there was a DVD made over there. We have a somewhat old VHS copy, and our VCRs are starting to crap out on us, so we'd like to replace it with a non-degrading version.

Thanks any help!

Perhaps what you could do is make use of a video capture card to make a DVD compliant file from the video, convert to NTSC and write to DVD-R.

It won't be as good as DVD, but it will be as good as VHS and won't degrade.

Can't help with the DVD, from what I can see it has never made it onto DVD in the UK. I will point out though that it is "Wales" the country, not "Whales" the aquatic mammals

I've often found movies on DVD that were released in France, but never UK or USA. The soundtrack is English, so maybe that would be another avenue to explore?

Woah! $70! What's that guy thinking? I love the movie but not that much!

I would capture it to PC, but my results are never very good. The transfer always results in slightly worse quality than if we just keep playing the VHS like normal.

Oh well, maybe one day they'll give this wonderful movie the DVD treatment. I just want the basic movie, I don't need the extras (though they'd be nice). There must be enough interest out there. I'm often amazed at what is on DVD. It's a shame that there's a bunch of crap that has been preserved and a lot of good stuff that hasn't.

If you end up having to transfer from tape and have a digital camcorder, it's often more straightforward to record from VHS to that and then do your regular firewire transfer with no hardware save the firewire port. FWIW.

Yeah, I've thought about doing this for most of these things in the future. I've never liked how my All In Wonder handles capturing video, and that's what I bought it for! Ah well...

But thanks for reminding me. I might try to borrow my friend's camcorder
