Hi all!

Is there any software out there that will allow you to download onto your HD in an Empeg-compatable comressed format anything that goes through your sound card. For instance..if iwere listening to an internet radio station and wanted to download its content to my HD in MP3 format, how would I go about doing it?

I use the software that came with my soundcard - Creative Recorder. It records what you hear to a wave file. Not sure about mp3s though.

I use Total Recorder Professional. It's not free (free to try but limited) but I like it very much.

Yes, I then convert with AudioGrabber to a bitrate of my choice.

But real time mp3 encoding would be better as it won't fill the hard drive so fast.

sooooo then..if one were to subscribe to one of those services which allows you to PLAY but not DOWNLOAD their library of music...one could conceivable build his own library using this software?

way way back sharing and taping albums (!) was one way for us poor teens to build up a library and take it with us in our Craig PowerPlay cassette deck in our Chevelle Malibu (Put THAT in your time capsule)...nobody cared (the taped LP sounded soooo much better than the pre-recorded tape..and dont even ask me about 8-track!!!!) (dateline 1970!)

But..since I am paying for a subscription to a digital music site...and I am using it for my own personal use...perhaps copyrights arent infringed upon?

Since autographs are to be paid for maybe the time will come when even quoting somebody will require a payment as the words he/she uttered are his/her own intellectual property!

Yes, but it is a pain (IMHO) and not worth it. I subscribed to napster for a few months and copied some songs with Total Recorder but it was such a hassle that I just went out and bought the cd's and canceled my Napster account.

Another problem with the new Napster is that all songs for the albums that are on their site are not available for download and are tagged as buy only even if you are a monthly subscriber.

I use it to time & space shift talk shows streaming on the internet. I record Glenn Beck, Rush, and Kimmer on WGST.com so I can listen to them in the car. Funny thing is that this is a local radio station but the signal is so weak that I can't pick it up on the north side of town.

So is that copyright infringement or fair use? I would say fair use.

Upon further thought......i think you are right to just buy the CD's for the fun of the original Napster was convenience and speed...i cant imagine wating and hour+ to download a cd in WAV then convert it and tag it...

I personally use Streamripper on Linux. I've been working on an automated way to move and manage it to the empeg, but haven't gotten that far yet.

I use it to timeshift DigitalGunfire and have been buying CDs based on the tracks I mark.

The legality of this is kinda shady, so, for the sake of keeping things on the right side, make sure you delete the tracks once you listen to them.

I realize that the practice is DEEMED as shady, however I don't see a lot of difference between what's been mentioned and recording Law and Order with a VCR.

The difference has to do with identical digital copies instead of inherently degrading analog copies. Of course, the DirecTiVo is currently doing the same thing with less possibility for further copies. Of course, our laws should prohibit redistribution of copyrighted materials, but they seem to prefer making tools that allow redistribution illegal.
