The first release of the Java Emplode clone is out at http://www.experient.com/jemptool (just grab the jemptool.jar, it contains both emptool and emplode). I'll get the mac .sit up in a couple days -- I'm actually going to build an installer either this weekend or monday to make it a little more like a first-class citizen of an app.
There are still quite a few things to do, but the basic capabilities (upload, synch, move, edit, and delete) are there.
Please email any bugs to mschrag@experient.com . One thing in particular is drag-and-drop is not available in JDK 1.1, and I can't go 1.2 because of our Mac friends, so the implementation that is there is custom (and does not support native->java dnd), so there are some weirdnesses in there -- bear with me while I work them out.

Wow! This is the coolest alpha I've seen in a while. Bravo! It is surprisingly spiffy for a first attempt - almost as good as the Windows Emptool and it runs great under X!
If you want any help - just tell me an area and I'll bang on it too. Anyone who is stuck using emptool, I recommend you switch to this cool app.
Rob, If Empeg still needs a mac version of Emplode - try this! In a few more revisions I suspect it will be equivalent to the Windows app and it runs anywhere.
Have I raved enough? ;-)
PS: Today is the first day I've had my Empeg running in my car and I love it!

Wow -- Thanks for the great reviews :) There are definitely some kinks to be worked out... Make sure that you have access to a real emptool/emplode in case the Java one explodes on you (one nasty problem is that I don't do protocol retries, so I fail immediately if there is a problem -- this can leave a sync in a rather unforunate state).
I'll be releasing another version in a few days... I would have done one sooner, except that I'm caught up in my own tangled web -- I decided to port ID3Lib to Java too... A feat that turned out to be pretty annoying. So once I get past this stage of my life (hopefully in a couple days), I'll hook it up to Jemplode and release again (with some bugfixes).
Again, though, thanks for the raving :)

Though I suspect you just missed off the / from the second keanu, I'm worried that Peter may now be in DOUBLE-KEANU mode.
Frightening. I'll keep an eye out for phoneboxes with infinity buttons and dark clothing.

That would be most atypical...
Don't you two have any work to do?

Hey guys -- I just put up a new release of Jemptool/Jemplode. I also setup a JEmpeg site on sourceforge, so sometime this week I'll be switching everything over to that. I'll post on here when that happens.
This release basically fixes a few nasty JEmplode bugs (leaving files open, etc) and integrates a "mostly" port of id3lib (enough to get access to the tags).
If anyone has any MP3's with Unicode tags, please send me a copy, because I know there will be some nasty problems -- that's pretty much completely untested.
Enjoy! ms
