I have a bunch of wav files with long file names that I would like to back up onto DVD-R. The problem is, DVD-R does not support long file names. Is there any way that I could do something to these files so that I can retain the track info?

You could FLAC them.

It should be using UDF, which supports long filenames. Up to 127 characters, anyway.

Put them into a .tar archive, or perhaps even a .zip, and then store the (shorter name) archive on the DVD.

Yeah, UDF is the way to go. I guess it depends on what you're using to burn. If it's Nero, are you using the wizard? If so then cancel out of it and click on the New Compilation button on the toolbar to the far left. Choose DVD from the drop-down, scroll down and choose DVD-ROM (UDF). Then you're set.

Nero is what I am using. That should do the trick. One question for you about Nero If you will. Did you ever have a problem with your machine freezing up when you go to open up the program? I am running a p4 with XPhome and 2 out of every 3 times I launch Nero, it locks the computer up solid. So I have to go and reboot. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Nero has a problem on my P4 Celery at work starting. It takes about 25 seconds from the time you double click to the time it pops up. Once it's running it's normal speed though.

No problems with Nero 6 on my XP Pro box.

If it's not using UDF for DVD by default, what is it using? ISO9660? Couldn't you just add Joliet (uggh) support to that?

I honestly don't know what it defaults to in the wizard that pops up, but the first item on the manual list is ISO which it defaults to whenever you open it. I don't really see why it doesn't save what your last project used, when it saves the type of media (CD vs DVD).

Anyway, the default ISO on the manual window is 9660, and there is a checkbox for Joliet. There are also options to "relax ISO restrictions" and allow more than 255 characters in a path and that sort of thing. It asks you about these options when you're creating the CD too, but you can specify them before-hand as well.
