Does anyone know of a program that will extract self extracting zip files ? I have a ton of them to download and extract and it is a pain to run the file, browse to the location, then move the files to a different folder. It would be nice to just download the file and drop it in a window and have the files extracted.

I tried stuffit and it works for some of the files. I also tried winzip and it wouldn't do any of them.

Its been a while since I have had winzip installed but with WinRAR installed if you right click, drag, and release in your right click menu you have the extract and extract to options.. and even open with winrar.. you could try using those and see if that helps and if you can do it to multiple ones at the same time...

WinZip has always been able to unzip self extracting zips when I have tried it. Just right click on the file and select extract.

Ditto, WinRAR can do it the way he suggested, or by one of a few options in the context menu.

I'm not having any luck with winrar either. I tried winzip some more and it says the file isn't a zip archive or is corrupted. I can extract it by running the exe so I don't know.

That's because it's not a self extracting ZIP file. It's something else... It's got some weird wrapper around it and I can't find the PK header in it at all.

Could it be an installer, not a standard executable archive file?

Or perhaps a newer/older version that the version of winzip/winrar you use doesn't understand?

That's what WinRAR tells me. I haven't seen a real zip file that it won't extract before, so I'll believe it.

I wonder what it is ? If I run the exe it just ends up with a folder full of files. When I run it, it comes up with a dialog asking to agree to a license agreement then it asks for a location, then it extracts to that location. It's weird because some of the archives will extract with stuffit ?

I would be nice if they had just used a zip instead .

Just some messed up executable format. If you open it in a resource editor, there's a bunch of dialogs and menus in there. Initially, I thought it might be a self-extracting CAB file, but it doesn't appear to be that either (and I think WinZip can extract those, too).

FWIW, self-extracting zips are just regular zip files with a stub executable prepended.

The linked file contains the unzipsfx program followed by a .zip archive. But.. it's been wrapped with some Windoze stuff that prevents ordinary tools from seeing through it.
