No offense intended to the perpetrator, but I thought this packaging was just a little over the top. Here's a boxed up RioCar recently received for repair, with one of my own units on top for size comparism..

There's nothing wrong with being a little overprotective of your baby. Especially if its an only child.

Although I agree, that might be more than a little overprotective. How much did it cost to ship that behemoth?

Edit: Nevermind, I'm dumb. Packaging is usually based on weight and thats probably just a box full of styrofoam peanuts

Most shipping companies calculate it based on volumetric weight so having that huge box will cost more.

We've had samples of half-a-dozen SMT components, total volume much, much less than 1cc, arrive in boxes bigger than that.

had a piece of paper (license renewal) from altera delivered in a box maybe 12 inches * 12 inches * 6 inches the other week, it was also delivered by UPS! Couldn't believe it when I opened it only to find an envelope with a piece of paper detailing the license renewal! Wonder how much that cost them.

And I thought that 12" x 12" x 8" box I received my two memory sticks in was obscene.

But yeah, so many items these days come in packaging that goes way overboard. Then there's the album and two CDs I got in the mail a few days ago, all packaged in a USPS box not much bigger than the record sleeve. But that's all that's needed. The box it's self is very sturdy. There weren't even any fragile warnings on it.

Is it a recycled box? I have a pile in my front hallway and I reuse the smallest one that works, but sometimes that's still too big.

We once received a single DDS tape in a box of a similar size. On calling the company they said that they pay a flat rate and since using large boxes the missing parcel rate dropped substantially.

We actually ordered three tapes and compained - so they sent us three DOZEN but only charged us for three!

I suspect the owner is inside, waiting to hand-deliver it to you. You might want to open it quick, before he suffocates.

Maybe there's an empeg-monkey in there, to make sure nothing happens to it on the journey.

That level of packaging was fairly common when I was getting players in for service. I'd get one like that every month or two. I ended up putting a note on the shipping instructions saying that oversized packaging wil result in you being charged extra for shipping if it cost us more, although I never actually did charge anyone.

I've also had players sent rattling around in FedEx boxes and even just wrapped in a plastic bag with a label stuck on. Amazingly they survived undamaged.

The parts warehouse I used to work at regularly received large boxes of various Chrysler pilot parts (future model year)...usually the box had one small plastic clip in it...go figure why cars are so expensive
