it didn't work

I thought I'd have to give it a try. I exchanged an email with Mark Lord and asked him whether he thought the Central has LBA-48 support. He thought some parts might be there and advised me to try it. No luck with this test...

Here's what happened........Well, after installing the drive, the CD booted and I chose the "Restore as New" choice or whatever it's called. It proceeded to copy the files, database, etc. from the CD...So far , so good...All the way at the end of the process, it rebooted to the CD again with no warning. At that point, the only choices you have are Upgrade Software or Rebuild As New....It was an endless loop. I tried it a couple of times, but the unit kept rebooting at the end of the file copy.

I managed to get the CD out by swapping back to the original HD and then I placed the 160 GB drive back in. It wouldn't boot up...

So is there any hope for this or is 120 GB the end of the line? It'd be SO cool to have a larger drive in there, this would solve the space problems that I'll be having soon....

I bet if you install everything on a smaller disc, and then just use Linux to copy the files all over to the new drive, it will probably work..

But then again, one never knows..

Is there a FAQ on these beasts around here someplace? I'm thinking of getting one (US$500 new right now), and need to know a little more about it first.

Thanks for the suggestion....I'll try it....I have access to a hard drive duplicating system, so I'll try to make a copy of my current almost-full 120GB disk over to the 160 GB drive and see how it goes....It should be interesting....

What are you trying to find out ?

Just wondering if it has heiarchical playlists (like empeg) and if it shares the same database format as the Empeg.

Ditto for the Rio Receiver, too. Also, how much power does it consume when just sitting there doing nothing but listening to the network.

The central does not have heiarchical playlists.

The database format is not the same, Roger stated that the other day.

If you get a Rio Receiver be prepared to hate the display. The visibility of the displays varies between units, but even at it's best it is dire. Very difficult to see from more that a few inches away (epecially if you are looking down at it).

Such a shame, the Receivered had two problems, the software and the display. The software issues have been largely fixed by third parties now, unfortunately the display is harder to fix.

P.S. I'm not critising the empeg guys over the software, they were clearly not given the opportunity by SonicBlue "management" to get things done properly (or to fix things later).

I have a Rio Receiver here, and yes, the display is barely readable. But it works well enough, even with the frustrating "stock" software loaded.

I may hack a server into Hijack for it shortly, so it can slave off of a docked Empeg. I'm thinking of replacing the Receiver's kernel with one that uses FTPFS instead of NFS for accessing the .arf data, so that it can "just work" with the Hijack FTP server -- no new code for that part.

The music database stuff sounds like it can just be done as an "on the fly" filter of the Empeg "database" file via the existing Hijack HTTP server, so not much new code needed there either.
