Ok. Traveling abroad and am looking for a cell phone that can work with mulitple GSM bands. I am going to Tunisia where the GSM band is 900mhz, and I live in the US where the GSM band is 1900. As i can figure the rest of the UK is on GSM 850.

Is the Tuner in most phones software driven, or is it tuned through hardware?

It's more complex than that. In the US, T-Mobile is on 1900, and Cingular and AT&T are on both 1900 and 850. Europe is 900, as Roger said. If you're going with T-Mobile, you can get away with a tri-band phone, otherwise you can pick up two phones, or get one of the new Motorola quad band phones that have recently hit the market.

My Sony Ericsson T610 has done an excellent job thus far over here in Europe. It is a traditional tri-band phone, with support for 900, 1800, and 1900. I use TMobile back home, and used an O2 SIM over here for a time.

I'm going to look for a quad band SE phone down the road, so that when roaming in the US on Cingular, I get the best reception. Roaming here and seeing 4-5 GSM providers at any time is awesome. US cell companies should be forced to a single standard.
