I thought I could do this, but obviously not I'm hoping some-one can help educate me

I have a Netgear DG824M modem/router/Wireless Access Point running my home network. I have one port wired downstairs to the back of my TV stack. It happily works when plugged in to my DVD player, Karma, laptop or PS2. To stop all the unplugging, I added an unbranded 5-port switch I had lying around to the end of that cable. On the other side, the DVD and Karma still work happily (haven't tried the laptop), but the PS2 can't see through it. Unplug the main cable and straight back into the PS2 - no problem!

I have tried the usual combinations of different cables and ports etc, but everything checks out. I even get the 100M and Full-duplex lights lights up on whichever port the PS2 is plugged into. You get the occasional traffic on all the ports as usual. The PS2 just times out as though it is not getting a response...

Is there anything a switch might do to block traffic to/from the PS2, or should I be hunting down the PS2 support boards instead of trying to reconfigure my network?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!!

Nick

As a generic network troubleshooting step, do you have a 10 Mbps hub you can test it with? Switches occasionally get a bit squirrelly...

Unfortunately not

If I can borrow one (don't know if I can yet), would it help?

Out of curiousity, what kind of DVD player do you have?

KISS DP-1500. I have been intending to buy the DP-500 for so long that they discontinued it and I had to buy the newer version

Works very well too! Not quite as polished as some other big names (possibly the modded firmware I loaded), but video play over the network works perfectly so far (100Mbps Ethernet, although it came with an 802.11b slot and card!). KML Web browsing is a bit gimmicky but fun.

And it seems to be "fairly easily" adapted to take a 2.5" HDD as an additional internal source (effectively upping it to the next model in the range for less money.

I have a similar setup, Netgear switch into a Netgear WAP, and have no problems. I'd suggest the PS2 is being naughty.

Well - something decided to play nice all of a sudden. It is working now! No idea what I pulled, prodded or power-cycled, but I put it all back gently, and let it be!

The abilities on this board are more than I imagined Thanks for the help anyway!!

Isn't it amazing? Half of my questions get answered immediately after posting here, without anyone needing to respond. It doesn't matter how much time I've spent trying to solve the problem myself

And I've become very familiar with that feeling:
1- hey, something's wrong!
2- maybe if I fiddle with this...
3- nope time to do some research...
4- still doesn't work, time to ask the board...
5- maybe if I fiddle with it some more...
6- okay, I didn't do anything that I know of, but it works...
7- pray nothing "changes," whatever that may mean

Replace the *switch* with a *hub*.

If you lack one, I have a couple lying around here -- we could trade.

It started working fine for no adequately explained reason!! Perhaps at the threat of being sent to Canada!!

Thanks for the offer though...

Now you should think about replacing the patch cable.
