Anyone else here at Quakecon? This probably should have been posted last week, but I just thought of it. If you want to catch me, I might be on the front row, right in front of the door (behind the pizza thing), in the roped off section, by the Doom 3 case.

Ooo. Ooo. Ooo. While you're there, I want to know how to do something specific using Doom 3 console and config file commands. I can't find this by googling or reverse-engineering the existing files... Number one thing I want to do: A "best weapon" key for deathmatch. I have tried putting the following in my config file: bind "e" "_impulse1; impulse2; impulse3; impulse4; impulse5; impulse6; impulse7; impulse8"But that doesn't work, the console reports is doesn't know the commands _impulse1 etc., which is odd because bind "1" "_impulse1" works... Number two thing I want to do: When I go to the "multiplayer" menu, it gives me a choice between "LAN" and "INTERNET". It always defaults to "INTERNET". I want it to always default to "LAN" but I can't find the command or cvar to make that happen. I've tried net_LANServer 1 but that doesn't do it. So if possible, can you collar one of the id Software guys and see if they can answer those questions? If necessary, remind them that I'm the guy who did the original Doom BFG 9000 FAQ... And by the way, I'm wondering if the little "movie" about the BFG that's in one of the game's later levels is some kind of a nod to that FAQ.. Perhaps not, maybe I'm just imagining it and being irrationally conceited...

Oh oh oh, one other thing... If you can ask them if there's a way to program custom 16:9 video resolutions in there... I've got a widescreen TV and I'd love to try Doom 3 in widescreen anamorphic mode if that's possible. All the video modes it lists for me are all 4:3 modes instead of 16:9... This is all assuming you can even collar any of the id guys while you're there.

I'm in row B26, 5 systems down (one of the two Shuttles stacked on top of each other.
Been all over the place though thus far, working the help desk and registration quite a bit. The helpdesk has been using the virus and patch CD I adopted to QCon.

Heh, negative 1 for the vid mode. I saw the custom rez variables, but didn't know what value to plug into vid mode to make it happen. And the customaspect trick I wouldn't have known. Nifty.

I didn't get a chance to head over there, I've been running around like a mad man and just now got to sit down at my PC again. Next year we'll have to plan something earlier.

I didn't play much either. I helped on registration Thursday for about 7 hours, then helped the helpdesk for another 7 hours Friday night. That, and I met up with Vito and a few other people I knew there.

The widescreen mode for Doom 3 didn't work for me the way I wanted it to... I did a post on PlanetDoom describing the problem and hoping to get a useful reply, but didn't get anything helpful. And it doesn't seem to let me bump threads, so that's a dead end. Anyone else have any ideas?

From QuakeCon Keynote notes: "id programmer Robert Duffy said he has gotten "5,000 emails" from folks wanting id to support widescreen modes for Doom 3. Duffy says he plans to take a look at this issue but onlt said, "Maybe" if widescreen mode will be put in."

Quote: From QuakeCon Keynote notes:
I slept through that as I had worked an 8 hour shift on the help desk till 6am. Still been meaning to watch the video I found from it, as they have been pretty interesting the past 2 years. It's a shame John didn't make it, as when he is there, a small group of people end up getting him to talk for many more hours after the official keynote ends. For anyone with even a tiny interest in game development, talking to him is a great experience. I still remember my followup question about color calibration for games, and his response being "Well, one time I did make a really accurate tool for users to go through, but it was so complex, almost noone in the office could use it."

That's good. I was going through some games the other night and noticing which ones worked and which ones didn't. Painkiller works really great in widescreen by editing one of the config files (it even sideboxes the movies correctly, very impressive), as does Quake 3 arena (it even has a "widescreen" for one of the video mode selection choices). I can set Tron 2.0 (lithtech engine) to a custom aspect ratio by editing the right file, but it's stretched instead of proper.

By the way, a beta version of the patch is out there already. Final version of the patch is reported to contain new single-player levels, which will be cool.

AKA, they did rush the game a bit. Definitely a shame, but understandable with how long the process was taking and how long they hyped it.

I think the single-player game felt very solid and complete. The multiplayer experience was a mess out-of-the-box, but I *expected* that to be incomplete anyway.
The beta version of the patch handles widescreen modes flawlessly, I'm happy to report.
