Hi all,

I tried to upgrade my drive (add a second drive actually) last night and in the process I broke the IDE cable that connects the HD to the Empeg motherboard. Basically the plastic that snaps the pins to the cable itself came off. Where can I find a repalcement? Is this an ordinary 2.5" to 2.5" laptop IDE drive (is there a standard in teh laptop world)?

It is not a standard part, it is custom-crimped at specific lengths. Please follow the "Eutronix" link above to order a new cable.

Did you remove the hot glue?

Yeah, um, if you're working on the drives, rememeber to read and carefully follow the instructions in here so that you don't do careless things like break the ide connectors because you didn't remove the glue first.

Yeah I removed the hot glue (eventually) but I was a bit too eager at first...

Ok, my new replacement cable came in th email today. But I just realized - I can't install two hard drives in my Empeg. Both my old cable and the new cable are too short. The space between the two IDE slots is too small. Does the Eutronix cable with the two extra inches fix this?

Is the "old cable" the one that came with your empeg? If so, it should be plenty long. The Eutronix cable (worth buying) is longer between the first drive and the IDE header on the main board. It gives more room between the drives and the board but will have no effect on the slack between the two drives.

Are you sure you're hooking it up right? The "folded" part of the cable goes between the two drives and the straight, unfolded part goes to the IDE header.

I don't really understand the cause of the problem either. Every cable we make is pretty close in dimensions as we use templates to produce them. The standard cables we make and tried have all fit two drive units just fine.

I have to say the cable I just received from you (the 2" + version) worked great, fit perfectly, and got my empeg up and running instantly.

Any chance he's simply putting it on backwards?

I just heard back from him. That seemed to be the case. He got it working.

Yup. It was a dumb user error. On backwards
