For the last few days my BBS response at home has been, well, glacial. My other internet/web site visits have been normal. I've got a cable modem and a Celeron 500. Could some cookies be causing this or a malfunctioning Java? Any help would be appreciated.

For the last few days my BBS response at home has been, well, glacial.

You're in the USA, right?

Doug Burnside and I spent a good portion of the evening last night debugging this. Here's how it breaks down:

- The BBS sucks through both Doug's home connection and Doug's work connection.

- The BBS sucks through my work connection.

- The BBS zips along just fine through my HOME connection.

So we did traceroutes, and I looked up the providers. Guess what? The sucky connections all use BBNPlanet as their provider for the transatlantic hop. The fast connection uses Level3.Net as the provider for the transatlantic hop.

So I think that could be it: BBNPlanet is having trouble with their transatlantic connection. I'd call them, but I wouldn't know what the hell to say. Anyone have any ideas?

Yes, I'm in New Hampshire. Like you say, it depends where I am. Right now work is great (even with a nearly saturated 128 kB line) but home is horrendous. I suppose all we can do is wait. If what you say is true, then they've gotten plenty of calls to be sure.

How would I do a Traceroute (2000 & W98 work & home) tracert seems to ring a bell...

Oh, and for what it's worth...

The BBS is zipping along at lightning speed for me this morning on my work connection. This was the awful sucky connection as of yesterday. So maybe BBNPlanet has solved their problems (knock on silicon).

I have experienced the same issue, zippy at home, but "glacial" (good analogy!) at work.

I havent investigated further, but I simply assumed it was the firewall weenies here at work throttling my empeg surfing (I check this board many times per day)

But then today, the skies opened and the and bbs rips down like it should, maybe a jelly-fish wandered into a fibre break on the sea floor? ;-)

ROFLMAO! What an image.

Yeah, just like me. Do a tracert and tell us whether your work ISP goes through BBNPlanet. And when you get home today, do another and tell us if your home ISP does.

Uhh, yeah, what Tony said.

But I've had this happen before, and I'm not holding my breath -- it could go back to glacial at any moment, based on past experience.

tanstaafl.

Update: It's been a couple of hours now, and the bbs is running faster for me than I have ever seen it before. My tracert no longer shows the bbnplanet link in the mix -- perhaps they had a slow and painful hardware failure that finally took them out of the loop?

Anyway -- I'm going to "make hay while the sun shines" and read about 200 posts that I simply couldn't get to over the past week or so because things were too slow.

Yeah, I don't think that means anything. That's just a response from someone's internal network, probably whoever is hosting the empeg.com site. I don't think it indicates a problem.

uh, last time I checked, that is a no no....
But a invalid route table could cause the symptoms we have been experiencing with the bbs.
So who let the new ccna on the production router?

Plus, the infernal firewall wont let me use icmp packets outside the dmz. (i guess that's a good thing)

I'm sticking with the jelly-fish, blame it on the jelly-fish, damn jelly-fish, or perhaps we should curse the (insert sea creature or man made ocean fairing vehicle here) that nicked the line enough for the jelly-fish to slide on in there?

I've traced from both work and home now (yes Tony I did try after I posted so there! pthththth,,,) Home is quicker this evening, back to its old self. The trace from here still shows bbnplanet.net still in the mix with nary a 192.168.x.x in sight.

Must have been that thing that bothered William Shatner from the wing of the airplane...

Since before he was Captain Kirk, when he starred in a Twilight Zone episode about Gremlins (hence the reference).

"There's a man on the wing of this plane!!!!!"

As I recall, John Lithgow played the part in the remake.

Which brings to mind one of the episodes of '3rd Rock from the Sun' that Shatner appeared on. He made the comment that on the trip in, he saw something on the wing of the plane, to which Lithgow said something to the effect of 'the same thing happened to me'.

Like most sit-coms, not very funny retold (especially the way I re-tell things), but when I first saw it I was practically rolling on the floor.

It's definitely as good as this week's X-Files where the guy who played T2 was investigating a man made of a metal alloy who was killing people. It was good.

Yeah, www.empeg.com is in the US already, so it wouldn't be affected by your ISP's transatlantic link.

Maybe it just shows how much I prefer this new season to the previous ones, but I didn't even notice that when I watched X Monday (on tape - no TiVo yet). Looking back, that is really funny! I'm gonna have to watch it again and see if Doggett makes any cracks about a metal-man!

Yes. Sorry. I should have made that clear. I'd tried the route to the BBS and thought I'd have a looksee where empeg.com was.

Yes, but my point was that surely that response should never make it out onto the internet proper should it?

Anyway......

While traceroute works, all it does is gets the reported IP address out of the packet header of the machine reporting the response. It does tend to indicate that they are behind a NAT router of some sort and the router is not doing header replacement on ICMP packets. Bug!

The jokes are fairly subtle, but they're definitely there, especially when Doggit (sp?) is going on about how impossible a metallic man is and that Scully must be nuts to believe such a thing etc etc...with a completely straight face.

Back to the thread: my BBS experience has been great since last posting. Hope it stays!
