Actually, that's not true. They trickle in every week. Most retailers get from 3 to 10 a week (that's an extimate based on local retailers). The X-box is what's going to make things interesting.... no licensing. Any programmer with the Kahonays to do it can write software for that sucker... at least that's the buz going around. Who knows with MS.
Sega is pretty much getting out of the hardware business and getting into the software and partnering biz. They've already anounced that they have partnered with a few set top box makers (Pace being one, whom i believe is UK based) and are going to incorporate the Dreamcast hardware into the set tops so you can play any dreamcast games on the box, and not even need a disc. The games will be downloadable. They are trying to incorporate themselves into a wider hardware market so they have a wider imbedded base to sell software and make revenue from licensed hardware. There's even rumors of a future Dreamcast on PS2 mod. Interesting stuff.
UPDATE: Here's an article that just popped up on that exact thing...

Just from comparing the stats from all the major consoles which can be found here .. I think that the Xbox will blow anything away.. As long as the game programmers use the Xbox to its fullest extent the ps2 will be out dated by a long shot within the first month of sells of the Xbox.. just my opinion though :) bboyd MKI #301

I would hope so being the last console out. Later technology should outpreform the older. But better technology does not carry consoles, the games do. Only time will tell. And the Dreamcast is still being sold until the end of the year with some nice games comming out for it. Sega wanted to go software only a little while back, it looks like they decided to rush it a bit.

Microsoft's XBOX has the interesting attribute of being license fee free. The other console makers have to pay a per title fee to the manufacturer. Microsoft's strategy allows any person with the ability to release software. What this means in terms of quality I don't know, but Microsoft's strategy is obviously quantity-- inundate the competition.

Being a PS2 developer I just HAVE to jump in...
The margin for improvement on the PS2 is 100 times bigger than what the XBOX will see in its lifespan. The PS2 is so flexible that second/third generation titles will be like night and day compared to the earlier ones.
XBOX developers on the other hand are stuck behind DirectX and it's very unlikely that NVidia will release register specs for their hardware.
That's also why some developers see the PS2 as 'hars to work on' and the XBOX as 'easy'.
Anyway, just my very off-topic $0.02

A PS2 developer?! Sweet, another guy in the industry on the BBS =].
Speaking of graphic improvement... the game i just finished animating on just got approved by Sony last Friday, and is on the way to the presses. I think it's some of the best graphics i've seen, but i'm biased. =] Starfighter, hitting shelves Feb. 21!!! Woohoo!

Congratulations on shipping, but that begs one question:
What business did you have crashing your car during crunch time?
I thought we were supposed to sleep under our desks (that's what they tell us here anyway)
Looking forward to play your game.

Heheh, well, i've been on R&D for weeks...it's the programmers that have been sleeping under their desks, but then, they do that whether on crunch or not. A buddy of mine has a couch in his office, but elects to sleep BEHIND it instead of on it, so as not to have it known that he is here in the morning.
Love Crash by the way... what exactly are you workin' on these days? (wink wink)

That's an idea! Leak out info on our game on an empeg forum and see how long it takes to trickle back to game web sites...
It's an action platformer, it's a new character, it's on PS2... That's really all I can say, I can already hear them coming for me...

Speaking of game consoles, do you guys know of any decent flight simulator (not of shoot-'em-up kind, but something like Fly!, Flight Unlimited (R.I.P.) or, sigh, MSFS) for some of consoles being in the pipeline?

This is one reason I prefer the PC as a gaming platform over consoles: Keyboards and mice, in addition to joysticks, allow for more sophisticated input methods. Consoles are (currently) limited as far as inputs are concerned, making things like flight simulators nearly impossible and first-person-shooters awkward. ___________ Tony Fabris

He specifically asked for real sims, not action-shooters like Sky Odyssey. I'm sure that Sky Oddyssey is a great game, and I'm sure that it's possible for sim-lovers to also love that game, but it's not what he was asking about. ___________ Tony Fabris

It's not an action shooter... There's no shooting or bombing involved at all. It's more of a mission based flight game...stuff like challenging canyon flythroughs. Definitely not an advanced sim, but on a basic level it is. You fly different planes and after completing challenges, you get different wingspans or weight changes or upgrades to your plane. It's the closest thing on a console right now. Read the review i linked to. Just thought he might wanna check it out..

Well, given that I (on rare occasions when I have time to play a sim) insist on starting Hawker 800's engines manually, APU and all, this one is probably not for me...
Thanks! Dragi "Bonzi" Raos

How are you going to do all that with a game controller with 8 buttons?
Press this sequence to turn on the fire extinguisher for the right turbine engine: AAXOXOBBAAAOOXXX
Plus who can read a screen full of gauges at NTSC resolution? Add in Anti-aliasing on tomorrow's consoles and there isn't any room for both beautiful graphics and detailed gauges.
Now quit dreaming and go back to playing Longbow 2 on your 1.5Ghz with Voodoo 5.
