Anyone here know how to disable the file compression option on a Windows 2000 or 2003 server? I'm trying to help a friend to disable this, as he gets the occasional call of the server running slow because some user decided to compress their multi gigabyte home folder. Searching the knowledge base and google tend to indicate it is possible, but they either go off on tangents about encryption, or say "it might be a good idea to turn off".

but it fails to tell how to do that. Instead it goes on to talk about a patch that can be applined to clients running XP SP2. Then once the patch is applied, some GPO can be sent out to disable it.

Anyone know what method they are talking about to disable it on the server? I think the reason he passed this up was due to the organization he works from still mostly shying away from SP2 on the desktops, a situation he has no control over.

It's not just the thingie in the "Properties" tab for the drive itself, is it?

Well, this is turning out to be a great question to stump self proclaimed Microsoft people at work. Still no solid answer, looks like my friend may just give up on the research route and open a support incident with Microsoft.
