If you bring the kit and player, and leave it with me to be worked on, that's OK. However, as previously stated, I am not going to do any repair work at the event - simply too much to do myself.
So to summarise: anyone wanting repair or upgrade work may bring players on the basis of leaving it behind for later posting on. You will also need to bring the packaging for later return posting: bring lighting kits, buttons, memory boards, tuners, etc. with you for fitting.
I would suggest another thread gets started for owners planning to do this: a description of the work needed and a player type would help.

Actually, this is silly of me. I can't make Rob handle all these little payments when he's so busy.
Instead, at the meet, I'll buy all the parts that are requested by the American owners. Then, you can simply PayPal me when I get back. Clearly, this will be much easier.
The catch, have your requests posted here by Friday night, because I'm leaving Sunday. Sorry for ALL the confusion I've caused by trying to help, but this solution will work much better.

Best to replace with the exact same kind.
One of them uses a through-hole mount (and the Displayboard is drilled for that), and the other is surface mount (and the displayboard is not drilled).

As Mark just said, the encoders have two different mounting systems (2=Surface 2A=Through), so the repair job is easiest if you replace like-for-like.
Also worth noting: The shaft of the encoder is shaped differently for the 2A unit, and unless you have an extra 2A knob lying around, you're not going to be able to fit your 2 knob onto the 2A shaft properly.
That said, if you've got an extra 2A knob, and you're willing to take a few serious risks in the procedure, it is *possible* to fit a 2A encoder onto a 2 displayboard. I've done it.
It involves carefully trimming the pins on the 2A encoder, then soldering it onto the surface-mount pads on the 2 displayboard. Then desoldering it and doing it all over again because without the through-holes to align it, you can't get it straight and in the correct position. Repeat until it's straight and in the correct position, each time risking damage to the displayboard or the VFD.
The benefit in the end is:
- 2A knob is keyed and less fiddly, so there's no chance the knob will slip on the encoder shaft.
- 2A encoder has a different feel in terms of rotation. It is stiffer and more solid in its operation, and does not make an audible clicking noise when you turn it.
- 2A encoder has a different feel in terms of knob-press-button. It requires a harder and more deliberate press to push the button. This reduces the chance that you'll accidentally press the knob when you were just reaching up to turn down the volume. I used to do that all the time with the 2, and it hasn't happened to me since I put the 2A encoder on.
The only disadvantage I can see (other than the difficulty and risk in fitting the part) is the keyed shaft shape is visible through a translucent backlit knob, so it looks asymmetrical.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to see if Rob would be willing to do it at the same time as fitting an illumination kit. I've got 2 and 2a translucent buttons. I guess I'll leave it to Rob to decide which he wants to do but sounds like 2a would be the preference.

Can anyone send me a mk2a? ( i mean aside from the scheming to get them in bulk at amersfoot) Maybe my question wasnt well worded. Im just trying to figure out if mk2a rotaries are available in general from someone..
