Hi everyone,

I finally went through some old boxes and found some money from a trip to Europe back in 1998. It's not a lot of money, in fact it's exactly 60 Pounds (I don't know how to make the funny L) and 10 Deutsche Mark.

Does anyone know if this can be exchanged without going to Europe? I think the UK money is still valid, but the Deutsche Marks are no longer legal currency. Is that true about the UK money?

According to some web research, I can exchange the DM to Euro at any "German National Bank" at any time (no expiration date). Does anyone know if I can do this from the USA, by mail, perhaps?

I don't even know what 10 DM is worth, so it might not be worth the bother. On the other hand, 60 pounds is enough to do something about...

Ideally, if the money is good, I'd like to just send it to PCA for a partial payment of a memory upgrade.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

10DEM is almost exactly 5€ (around $6), so, you are not going to get rich on that Better to save them as collectibles. British are still on pounds (and look as if they intend to stay that way), so you should be able to exchange those 60GBP (~$110) somewhere locally.

Any UK coins you've got are still valid as they haven't changed recently but some of the notes might be old style ones which have been taken out of circulation. You just need to take them into a bank to get it changed for a new note. If they're really old then you'd have to make a trip ot the Bank of England in London to get it changed.

Next time you're in Vegas, take your foreign money. Last time I went I got $160 CAD changed to US dollars (not chips) with no service fee. I imagine they would do the same for Pounds and Euros. Not sure about discontinued currency though.

I have seen money changing services at other casinos around the country, but most seem like they take a service fee.

I got my money changed at Treasure Island by the way. They didn't take coins though (not even the $1 and $2 ones).

See, I like money in Canada.

It's cllearly marked LEGAL TENDER for all debts. It doesn't matter if it's 5 years old, 10 or 20. In or out of circulation. You can still spend it anywhere here. People aren't anal about accepting a ripped bill either. As long as both serial numbers are present, no matter how mangled the money is, it's still worth every penny.

The only time you have to exchange it at a bank is if it's in really rough shape. But walok into any store today with a note from 1955 and unless the clerk is an idiot you won't have a problem.

What you may have a problem with are clerks using ultra-violet light trying to detect counterfeit notes. They've been suckers by the manufacturers of those lights into believing that older (as recent as 3 years) had any special UV marking. They didn't. I've seen store zombies turn down and claim some $50 bills were counterfeit right in front of me (other customer). It only took a split second and one touch of the hand to tell they were real and that the clerk was smoking. Oh well. Not everyone's had the luxury of having worked for a bank and dealt first-hand with fakes.

They should encourage the use of the $2 bill, too. Very handy.

Well the new 1$ coin addresses every issue with respect to telling them apart from other US coins.

The only other reason I can figure, is that merchants don't like them is because of how heavy they are compared to a stack of bills. Think of carrying a couple hundred in ones around when they are coins.

I'm really begenning to believe that the only way the 1$ coin is going to be widely adopted is if the 1$ bill is just taken out of print and circulation.

That's a good point about the merchants. Not to mention the fact that many of them may have registers that don't have a slot for an additional coin.

I wonder how British merchants feel about it. They don't have a bill until the £5 note, which is worth over $9. That means virtually all small purchases require nothing but coins. I imagine it saves the government a lot of money in replacing small bills, though. Coins can easily have a lifespan of fifty years. I don't imagine bills generally last for more than ten. I guess that's less important in Britain, though, since they change their currency about every four weeks.

Well, not all registers are the same. I've seen some small ones that have only four slots. And I've seen many people use the fifth slot on registers for other crap instead of coins. Of course, that still precludes you from using half dollars. Not that anyone is really inclined to use half dollars anyway.
