Just in case anyone here doesn't also read Riovolution, we've just put Rio Music Manager version 2.95 on the web site. This fixes the infamous playlist deletion bug, and so is a strongly recommended upgrade for anyone running versions between 2.80 and 2.93 inclusive. If you're still running 2.61, upgrading is less important.

Because we've only tested this release on Windows 2000 and XP so far, that's all it will install onto. If you have a different version of Windows, it may still work, so if you're feeling adventurous you could cajole a friend into installing it onto 2000/XP and then sneak the "riomm.exe" file back onto your computer in place of your existing "riomm.exe".

I know I'm not the brightest cookie in the Empeg firmament, but could you put a link to that, I've been all over ehe Riovolution site and can't get it?

Thanks for the heads up. I'm sure this goes for several of us here, we do appreciate these announcements here. I rarley check Riovolution.com, as it is filled mostly with noise and very little useful info.

OK, scratch that, do not download that version of Rio Music Manager, unless you can use Ethernet with your Karma. Version 2.95 fails to read playlist contents on Karma over USB.

And apparently the maximum edit time on that post has now expired.

This is all fairly depressing.

The fix is pretty straightforward and will be in all future RMM releases. The only thing we're debating here at the moment is whether or not the fix is worth its own release.

IMHO: You release something that breaks current functionality, it's probably best to fix it.

I know I'm not one of the deciding votes, of course.

That's part of the problem. We didn't break any current functionality. Playlists didn't work in 2.92 or 2.90 either

FWIW I too reckon we should make another release. Quite frankly, in the Empeg days we'd've stayed late last night to make an extra release for such a paper-bag bug. But Rio, it seems, does these things differently.

It wouldn't bother me to use network, if someone could tell me how to set it up. I'd been using it, until.......
Under pressure from SWMBO/H & S considerations, I had to take up the loose cat5 cable, which has been running from the telephone point, across the hall, past the kitchen door, the bottom of the stairs and in to my ops. room since last September when broadband came to our village. Deciding that a wired network and a solid stone floor were incompatible, I stuck a wireless network through on USB.
My question is, if I take a Cat5 cable direct from the network socket of the PC to the Karma, can I make it work, do I need a crossover cable and how do I configure it?

If you take a crossover cable, and you've got the PC configured to use automatic IP addressing and if the Karma is configured to use automatic IP addressing, then they should both pick addresses in the 169.254.x.y range, and it oughta "just work".

YMMV of course.

That's what I thought, but it justs seems not to, it knows the Karma's there, the cursor changes to an hour glass, then it comes up with: The connection has limited or no connectivity. Don't worry, it's just that Cris, my personal network expert is zooming round Spain in a Smart car, usually he takes one look at the screen, a couple of clicks of the mouse and looks at me as though I'm half witted, I can wait for the experience, honestly!

You're pretty close. After it says limited or no connectivity, have you tried starting RMM and seeing if it finds it?

Now that's where you've got my lack of technical ability, how do I do that? - If it's not too much trouble.

Well, you just run it. The "limited or no availability" message is just Windows XP saying that it had to make up an IP address, so the adapter might not work for accessing the Internet (or whatever) -- we already know this, and we're not bothered.

How thick am I, I just figured what RMM meant, but no, it doesn't find it.
In the meantime I found a document on Rio and tried to manually configure it, with the same results.

I have been having trouble seeing mp3 files in folders on the computer using Music Manager 2.95.
I have used a TAG editor to try and see why some files display in the folder and others do not. All files transfer via Winodws to other brand players and also to the Rio S510 but they do not play unless added with Music Manager.
I cannot see any difference in the files. I have tried deleting the TAG but no effect. Any ideas?

Some clarifying questions:

Have you tried using version 2.96 instead of 2.95 (the link to 2.96 is just above this post)?

When you say it can't "see" the files, can you be more specific about what you mean? Where are you expecting the files to appear that they're not appearing?

Do the files have unicode or high-ascii characters in their file names, folder paths, or tags?

Are the files tagged with any sort of security or hidden/system file flags?

Are the files genuine MP3 files, as opposed to some other audio format?

Can you drag the files directly from Windows Explorer and drop them onto the Rio player in Rio Music manager?

I just grabbed 2.96.
Exp;orer sees all files in the hard drive folder
I can copy all files to the S510 using explorer but only th eones Music Manage sees and transfers will play. This makes sense as the indexes are not built/
Music manager sees (displays the names) of 4 out of the 8 files in the folder.
I can put the files up on a subfolder of one of my websites.
I will try 2.96 first.
Clue: I did edit the TAG files on all of the files to create albums and track numbers so the files can be organized on a Sandisk e250 and a generic player. Only those 4 display.
As far as I can tell al code is standard. I ahve not looked at the file names with a bit editor yet.
i will try 2.96 and report my experience.
Thanks for the help.
