I know if this is possible, the log can be very large, but I am running alpha 11 and would like to know what the log looks like when it reboots every 4 hours when in the car.

is it possible to save the serial log locally as a text file so I can review it later?

Thanks in advance.

Not in a simple way, no. Would require changing a lot of things such as: Making a change to Hijack so that it mounts the parition as read-write in the car (bad), writing a program to actually do the thing you're saying (maybe a script file would be enough, but I don't know), and set that script to run at boot up.

good points...i didnt think about r/w in the car...that would be bad...

somehow i am obsessed with getting the log in the car w/o a laptop.

another idea popped into my head...

is there an easy way to hook up a pda via serial in the sled and capture the log?

( i saw the note in the faq about the serial connector in the sled, but i have not absorbed its meaning yet.)

That depends entirely on the PDA and if it's got a serial port you can use.

It means, in some cases, you've got to wire up your own serial cable if you want to grab serial data while it's in a docking sled.

I've bought a few AirCable Bluetooth Serial adapters (link to BBS thread here), one for my docking station at home and another for in-car use. I haven't hooked it up yet in the car, but this would be a good solution for a cable-less install where you could still get the serial data out of the player. You could probably even use a terminal program on a PDA to get the output if that PDA has BT support (and the terminal app, too).

What about the IR port? Or was there no IRDA on the empeg's side?

Actually, this is possible. You will not be able to see the bootup log, though because irattach has to be run after startup. Also, it would potentially be difficult to keep line of sight for the PDA-Empeg in the car constantly waiting for a crash.
