Random segfault / segkill errors

Okay, so I installed a new HDD, it went with relative ease. However, on the copying over the faux id3 tag info, there was some error. Since the mp3s were all properly tagged, I figured there was no problem. Actually, the fact that there was an error in the process might not even be relevant to this problem, but I just want to cover all the bases.
When I'm using the player, there will be random segfault errors. The song will stutter, the error occurs, followed quickly by a segkill error. If I wait a few seconds, the tracks continue to play. If I remove the unit and put it back in, the positioning is lost and it will play a different track from the same album or the song will be at a different progress.
I should also note that there's no problems with the songs, I've listened through some songs and they had no issues whatsoever only to have the unit segkill on other playbacks. I opened up the unit and checked the cabling, everything seems fine.
What is the problem here? I searched FAQ and BBS and nobody seemed to have this as a recurring problem.

Please detail exactly what you mean by "copying over the faux id3 tag info".
Please detail exactly what you mean by "some error".

Unfortunately, I can not remember the error. I was talking about the mp3 track information which isn't an id3 tag. When it happened, I thought that maybe it hadn't copied the track information over so I powered on the unit and all the playlists and correct track information was present. Since it functioned properly I had assumed all was good and didn't log the error. I thought nothing of it until the random segfault/kills began.
Any ideas?

What exactly *did* you copy, and how?

Ever since I tried v3.00 alpha 11, I've gotten random segkill errors as well. I've backed down to v2.0 beta 13 and still get them.
I'd like to try to replace my IDE cable, where can I get them these days?

Could it be that you just never noticed them before because Hijack didn't display them on-screen til recently?

The player reboots when I get the sigkill error and when it starts up, it's in "Now and Next" visual mode.

Let me rephrase: What hijack version are you running and when did you install it?

After a long lapse of not doing any upgrades, I believe it was hijack v439 and I installed it in early August. Yesterday I tried v444 with the same results.

Which version of the player software are you using? Have you done anything to the hardware recently?

At the time that the error popped up, I think that the only thing I did was upgrade to v3 alpha and a new hijack. Then in hope of getting rid of the sigkill errors, I downgraded back to the latest v2 beta and hijack.
This was all a few months ago, so my memory is a little fuzzy. Is there any way to find out the source of the sigkill error?

Ok... Thanks for clarifying. In that case, the errors were probably always there...they were just never displayed until you installed an updated version of hijack. As to what is causing them, it could be any number of things from a bad disk drive, to faulty mp3s, to bad cable or header, etc...

I have random segfaults and I am suspecting faulty mp3s.
Is there a way to check and correct faulty mp3s?
TIA.

Ok, I'm game for fixing problems, but is there an older hijack available somewhere that I can use to skip the sigkill errors for now?

They all "skip" the errors. The current versions simply also inform one of the errors.

Well my player also reboots after getting this sigkill error, so maybe this is indicative of something more fatal?

I doubt it. The player software program probably restarts after a sigkill, since that's how it is designed to behave regardless of Hijack.
But if the player is rebooting then there's something seriously wrong.

Okay, I've replaced the HDD cable and HDD to get those out of the equation, but the player still occasionally sigkills and reboots. Typically, the player is in Spectrum Analyzer/128 mode with the info line displayed on the bottom but I have tried other visualizations. After the player reboots, it's in 'Now and Next' display mode. I don't believe I've ever gotten a second sigkill once the player got into 'Now and Next' mode. When I turn off the car and restart, the player boots up into the 'Line' display mode like normal.
Anyone have any clues as to how to debug this? Again, the only thing I did differently was to try a v3 image and new Hijack several months ago. I'm back to the latest v2 but the sigkills continue.

I also have been getting these since upgrading to v3a11, from v3a7. I have found that the occur most frequently when using certian visualizations. Now and next, and info have NEVER had one, but Ive seen them for the most part on the 3d visualizations, and the spectral ones. Hula Hoops seems generally safe, as is Casualty. Not sure about all the others, but Ive seen that even just browsing the visualizations, when I pass over the spectral ones or some of the 3d ones, it will segkill.
I also seem to get these reliably in the Radio mode, most usually on a particular station around here that broadcasts lots of RDS data. Those that done (or stick to just the station ID) seem to not cause problems, at least not reliably.
I await any good advice, but its not THAT annoying if I just stay away from the problem visualizations.
Jeff
