Now i have on order a G5 powermac and 2x20" displays now asides from the huge hole that puts in my finances it present a tiny little problem in the neatness stakes. The Cinema displays have a lovely intergrated cable that comes down to behind the machine so power, video signal, usb2 and fire wire 400. The on the back of the display is 2 USB ports and 2 firewire 400 ports.

Now on the back of the machine is 1 firewire 400 and 1 firewire 800 ports but i have 2 firewire 400 plugs one from each display so i need a converter to go from 400 to 800 i have found one in good of USA but anyone know where i can get one UK side.

Or do they know of any better solution.

I'm 99% sure that Apple's FireWire 800 can accept both FW800 and FW400 protocols and can accept both 9-pin FW800 cables and 6-pin FW400 cables. Unless you have one of those tiny 4-pin FW400 cables, you shouldn't need any adapter, and the 4-to-6-pin adapters are easy to come by.

But you still don't need an adapter, you just need a cable that's 9-pin on one side and 6-pin on the other. Like this Belkin one from Amazon UK, for example.

You can also plug (if the cable will reach) one display's firewire connector to one of the other display's firewire ports.

No, you don't. Get a normal 9-pin to 6-pin cable that's long enough to reach from the 9-pin port on the back of your computer to the 6-pin input on your monitor. Plug it in. Done. Unless you have some requirement that you use a 6-pin to 6-pin cable in the middle for some reason.

the cinema display comes with a nice 6 pin plug that hangs off the display cable so i need some way of getting a male 6 pin into a 9 pin female hole.

The male to male cable is easy to get but a male t female is harder to get unless i can find a 6pin gender changer

You need one of these. A Google search of the part number and UK seems to turn up a few resellers there with it.

I've been meaning to get one myself for my Powerbook, to avoid adding another cable. I for example could use this adapter to keep the usefulness of the 30ft 6pin to 6 pin cable I already own. I'm suprised they are so hard to find.
