I think I'll turn one of my PCs into a linux box, this is what I want it to do:

File server
Slim server
IMAP server

I've never set up a Linux system and have very limited capabilities in it, which Linux should I go for?

I use Red Hat, but it's not great for starters.

Mark Lord seems to like Kubuntu, so I'd try that.

Maybe also try Lycoris as it's aimed at transitioning users.

Kubuntu is basically Ubuntu for people who prefer KDE to Gnome. However, it has to be said that this is the minority. Ubuntu is more mainstream, which means more support and would be a great way to start with Linux.

I have two friends who have started off with Ubuntu, and both are doing great, much of it works out of the box and its come to the stage where it is pretty much 99% point and click. As a bonus, they both installed it and started using it without needing to ask me any questions - its incredible how far things have come. All I had to show them was how to add "universe" and "multiverse" to their apt sources, so they can easily install a massive amount of stuff.

If you want to decide for yourself between Gnome and KDE, by all means, install both! Its always worth trying out a few distros when you're new. An easy way of quickly trying out KDE is by booting a Knoppix LiveCD, btw.

False. Both are mainstream. But, yes, the Gnome desktop has a higher degree of Microsoftism than the KDE desktop on Ubuntu.

Cheers

Oh yeah, I mean, they are exactly the same! Kubuntu is just Ubuntu with kubuntu-desktop installed. By mainstream, all I mean't was Mark is the only person I know who is using that They are the same really and its easy to switch between them.

I am using Kubuntu too

I tried Ubuntu but I prefer KDE to Gnome.

K/Ubuntu was the first Linux distribution I have tried that picked up all the slots on my USB card reader (not just the first one) and the first one that printing to a USB printer on my GF's WinXP box worked on

Installing was painless too!

I have been able to make almost a complete switch from Windows now.

OT: Does anyone know of a good digital photo management app for Linux?
Specifically one which allows 'drag and drop' tagging of images with keywords and susequent searching on these tags, such as this one?

Lycoris is bad because you're always root on the system. Ubuntu/Kubuntu are what I use for a lot of things.

Probably wouldn't be a problem for me, but if (K)Ubuntu is easy I'll probably give that a go

Last time I tried KDE, I had a few 'bad experiences' which subsequently turned me into a bit of a Gnome fanboy. Y'know what, I'm going to give KDE a go when I get home. Its nice that I have a Linux partition that is purely for mucking about with. Looking forward to doing that actually

Yes it would. Repeat after me: I don't want root privileges all the time.
