I'm experimenting with going back to firefox again, now that 1.5 is out. There are some relatively new plug-ins and some nice features that make it more paletable to me now that they've reached 1.5. For instance, I was able to get a spell checker installed with zero pain this time. (Last time I tried it, that was one of the reasons I stopped using it.)

Except, just tonight, I noticed that when I navigated to a page, the first thing it did was try to contact a Google statistics server, and it was having trouble reaching it, so it was timing out on that.

Where is the menu option that shuts off this statistics collection? I'm looking and I can't find it. I've done some web searches, but they all talk about how prefetching skews the statistics and how to turn off prefetching. Not how to turn off the statistics collection altogether.

Anyone know?

If you're talking about this BBS, it's the BBS, not Firefox. I disabled it by adding www.google-analytics.com to my adblock extension.

The CustomizeGoogle extension has an option to disable this.

Exactly what Bitt said. It's this BBS doing it, code that I did put in to see one of the new Google tools. I'm debating it's usefulness, especially if everyone starts disabling it, or that it is causing loading problems (something I personally haven't seen). Right now I have no idea how well it works anyhow, as it is still not getting data properly for this site. Been working with some people at Google about it, but their response times have been pretty slow.

*edit* it's gone now. Thinking slightly more about it, if it gets blocked by people here, the usefulness of it goes away anyhow. So, to judge traffic to the site, I'll just find a log analyzer again.

Thanks, Bitt, that's exactly what I did, about 30 seconds before seeing your reply.

Sorry, Tom. I kept meaning to ask about it, but kept forgetting. I don't know why, but it just triggered my paranoid gene.

Now that I've gone to 1.5, my spell checker doesn't work anymore. Perhaps my postings show this! Which spell checker did you go with? I had to Google one last time and try a few before I found one.

Bummer, it looks like Spellbound doesn't work with FireFox 1.5 (yet?)

I'm using Spellbound on firefox 1.5 no problem. Where'd you get that idea?

I guess the links to the spell check libraries, by saying "1.0 +" instead of saying "1.X" make it a bit confusing.

The install fails for me and it says 1.5 is not supported. A Google search showed it as a common problem. I'll try the other option.

EDIT: Nope, none of them work. A few people seem to get lucky, but it fails for most people.

EDIT 2: Installing this extension is a little hack that allows installation of incompatible extensions. May be useful in the future. I think it's made for beta testers so they can install and test extensions.

Very odd that it worked for me with zero issues, click, poof, there it is.
