It's an HE102. Worked great for me when I lived in an appartment building. Don't need it now that I've moved to the 'burbs and have a powerbook. Free to good home, $5 or $10 would be nice to cover shipping, but isn't a big deal.

I'm just about to buy an AP and a would be fine for what I want. Pity postage probably would kill it for me...

Out of interest, how did you find the range with a?

I used it in a small appartment so I never tested the range. It alwas covered the 800sqf well, but that's not saying anything. 802.11a is supposed to have worse range than b, and I suspect g, as g is supposed to have worse range than b. If you don't need a, I'd go with a G one at the moment. If on the other hand, the six overlapping networks slow your throughput to a crawl and it drops to zero whenever someone picks up their 2.4ghz phone, 802.11a is perfect.

Mmm.. I ought to pass up this one after all. From reading up on it, it sounds much better suited to anyone in an apartment flat, than it would be in the four-story dwelling where I had hoped to use it.

Perhaps the third person to reply will be the one, then! In the last few months, I've had three different laptops parade through my house (with different owners), and now that one of them is semi-permanent, I'm getting a bit tired of the cable strung across my living room...

I'm looking up the stats for it now...

Nope. Not for me, either. I have doubts that I'd be able to convince my gf and all my friends to convert from 802.11b.

On the plus side, I know a bit more about wireless networking, now!

802.11a is apparently very popular in Europe -- the technology is best suited to a densely populated environment, and smaller living spaces than we (I) have in Canada.

Anyone in Europe want a wireless AP?

I can always post it on freecycle (local free stuff only mailing lists) and I'm sure it'll be gone. I just figured I'd give everyone here a shot at it first. No pressure to take it.

I thought 802.11a was mostly US...? I haven't seen any 802.11a in Europe (at least not in Norway), only b and g.

It's mostly no where, as far as I know. It never really got off the ground. Which is great if you A) live somewhere with a lot of 2.4ghz interference (cordless phones, microwaves, other wireless networks) and B) have a laptop with a dual band card. When I was running it, I ran a 802.11b AP at the same time for other people, but it was real nice to have my laptop have its own slice of spectrum.
