Again turning to the forum for obscure information... I got a bunch of computer room stuff from a bankrupcy auction. Among them is a rack-mount Compaq unit with a TFT screen (TFT5000), a keyboard (with scrollball) in a drawer, and an 8-port KVM switch that only says "Compaq" on it, but no model number. Only other info is some sort of a serial number - 180INB31A03826.

I am trying to find some sort of documentation/usage instructions.

These things seem to be pretty common in computer rooms, so I guess some of you might have come across them...

I probably have stuff like that in the datacenter here. What do you want to know?

I'm actually looking for a manual, but all I really need to know is how to set it up and switch screens. I just found this - at a first glance it looks right.

Yup. <printscreen> on those KVMs gets you to the configuration section and swaps ports.

Yep, what he said. Any Compaq server KVM should always respond to Print Screen to bring up the interface. From there, it's pretty easy to work with. The older ones used just a basic menu with single colors, the newer KVMs moved to a GUI looking popup and allowed mouse control too.

Some handy hints, those KVMs support chaining multiple ones togther. Designate one KVM the master where you will plug in the console port to. Then connect port 1 to the console port of the KVM you want to chain it to. You can do that on all 8 ports for a total of 64 systems. If it's not acting right, the firmware might not be in sync on all the KVMs. The firmware on the newer ones are upgradable via a download, however the old ones had physical rom chips that would need to be replaced.

Interesting. But then I would have to find more of them

Over serial, I assume. Any idea what protocol?
